Shootout at the LAFCo Corral ends in settlement

    After months of closed sessions and speculation surrounding John Gullixson’s departure from the Plumas Local Agency Formation Commission, all parties have reached a settlement agreement, announced publicly for the first time at the Portola City Council meeting last Wednesday, Nov. 28.
    Under the agreement, Gullixson receives $35,835.36, representing five months of salary and benefits, and $9,914.31 for accrued vacation leave.

Artists’ cooperative believes where there is art, a community thrives

    There is an incredible amount of artistic talent in Plumas County. Monday evening, Oct. 19, at a gallery on Main Street in Quincy, what was previously a great idea became a reality with a simple show of hands. Main Street Artists was born.
    Lara Eichenberger is not an artist herself; however, she has always had a great appreciation for all forms, whether photography, painting, textiles or sculpture. A great idea was hatched when Lara noticed the “for lease” sign in the window of The Studio Gallery.

Chemical spill closes SPI mill, sends four to the hospital

Three Sierra Pacific Industries employees and one explosives contractor were injured Monday, Nov. 2, when a chemical leak occurred at SPI’s co-generation plant in Quincy.
The victims were exposed to chlorine gas when a truck driver making a delivery for Sierra Chemical hooked up to the wrong tank.


There are two tanks at the drop-off point. Quincy Fire Chief Robbie Cassou reported they are clearly marked and identified in plain language and with a universal number system known to people who work with  chemicals.

Portola cowboys kick in LAFCo contribution

    Last week’s city council meeting was a livelier affair than is usual. Seating was full with standing room only, with attendants on a variety of agenda issues. Even the staff table was longer than usual and well attended.
    The agenda was long, but the mood was cheerful.
    Council member Bill Kennedy sported a new Stetson and City Manager Jim Murphy wore cowboy boots. A couple of other council members briefly wondered how “Eastside Cowboys” would look added to their nameplates.

Influenza update

The first 200 doses of H1N1 nasal spray vaccine have arrived in Plumas County.


This first shipment of H1N1 will be reserved for household contacts or caregivers of infants younger than 6 months, and household contacts of pregnant women. The nasal spray vaccine is only for healthy people between 2 and 49 who are not pregnant.

Check with a doctor’s office for availability or call the Plumas County Public Health Agency clinic. PCPHA will make appointments in Quincy and at outreach clinics in Greenville, Chester and Portola.
