Railroad Days rolls into town this weekend
The 30th annual Railroad Days celebration kicks off this Friday at 4 p.m. and organizers say they are ready.
“It’s pretty much done,” said organizer Patricia Ryan, who, along with her husband, Rich McLaughlin, stepped in to run this year’s event.
They and a core group of individuals have been meeting weekly and working intensely to ensure the future of Railroad Days.

Book signing and Wine Walk canceled
The Old Town Chester Wine Walk event, scheduled for this Friday, August 17, has been cancelled due to the greater issues related to the fire in our area.
Books and Beyond in Chester has also canceled a book signing scheduled for Friday, Aug. 17, because of fire conditions and advisory evacuations in the area.
Neurologist Dr. Jeff Lobosky was set to discuss his recently published book, “It’s Enough to Make You Sick: The Failure of American Health Care and a Prescription for the Cure.”

Four vie for three City Council seats
Three incumbents are seeking to retain their positions on the Portola City Council, but a challenger hopes to unseat one of them.
Restaurant manager Michelle Gault is challenging councilmen John Larrieu, Phil Oels and William Weaver, whose terms all expire in November. Earlier this year, Gault was unsuccessful in her bid to become a Plumas County supervisor.

Grand Jury commends city staff, raps council
The 2012-13 Plumas County Grand Jury report is out, and the city of Portola received mixed reviews.
The Grand Jury applauded the city staff and wrote, “They are to be commended for a job well done even under adverse circumstances,” but the City Council didn’t fare as well.

Voluntary evacuation issued for Canyon Dam
Due to the continued spread of fire to the northeast, the Plumas County Sheriff issued a Voluntary Evacuation Notice for Canyon Dam, Big Meadows, and Rocky Point Campground at 5 PM, August 13, 2012. Please see the Sheriff's Evacuation Order Below.
