It’s hard to keep up with the newest innovations in technology. The latest is the new smartphones that cannot only send and receive phone calls (an old-fashioned way of communicating, or so it seems), but also send text messages, e-mails and photos almost instantaneously to almost anyone in the world.
These smartphones have opened a new door to the world of newsgathering, and while the news staff still believes in sending out reporters and working the beat angle, we are recognizing people can’t be everywhere at once.

Election rules

Once again it is time for the paper to explain its rules when covering election news.

Tuesday, June 8, Plumas County residents will vote in the primary election for governor, lieutenant governor, California secretary of state, state controller, state treasurer, attorney general, state insurance commissioner, state assemblyman, a U.S. representative, a state senator and superintendent of public instruction.

They will vote at the local level for county sheriff, district attorney, District 5 and District 3 supervisors, treasurer-tax collector, county assessor, auditor-controller and clerk-recorder.

The Plumas County Economic Recovery Committee wants to go on record against your representation of the people of California in your Jan. 4, 2010, appeal of the 2004 Sierra Nevada Framework. The specific appeal was filed with the Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in relation to the Eastern District Court’s decision on the 2004 Sierra Nevada Framework.
PCERC was formed to address the existing and increasing economic impacts associated with natural resource issues within Plumas County. The specific issue deals with the lack of proper vegetative management of our national forests.

Because we’re not Haiti

Feather Publsihing

By now we’ve all seen pictures of the horrific conditions in Haiti following a 7.0 earthquake Jan. 12: Entire neighborhoods reduced to rubble, collapsed hospitals, a port and airport that could barely function. While we can’t control natural disasters, we can control our ability to respond to them. It should be an embarrassment to the world community that it has let a nation languish in such poverty that it had absolutely no capacity to deal with a natural disaster that was sure to come sooner or later.

Here to stay: Renewing our commitment

Now that a rather challenging 2009 is behind us, I can’t think of a better time to share a few thoughts about the role and future of community journalism in our society and that of Feather Publishing in your hometown.
Local newspapers are much more than paper and ink. Newspapers pull towns and cities together by connecting people with those around them. Our employees work and live in the communities they cover. They’re your neighbors. They share your values. They understand your community because they’re a part of it.
