One loss too many: vote No on Measure B

This week our Letters section is once again dominated by letters about Measure B, which would cap the Plumas District Hospital tax assessment at $50 per $100,000 of assessed value. Roughly, two-thirds of the two-dozen letters we received this week spoke to the issue. We would be hard pressed to think of the last time that one issue so dominated our public forum.

Flags were flying half staff last week across the state in remembrance of State Senator Dave Cox, who died Tuesday, July 13.

Typically, when one hears the word senator, thoughts head in the direction of politician and that equates with special interest groups and a self-serving agenda.

  

Music festival creates joy, teaches interdependence

Magical. It's the best way to describe the High Sierra Music Festival. Beaconed by music and art, thousands of people joined in the mountains over the Independence Day holiday and became a big quasi-family, united by joy and peace.

In a jaw-dropping set that closed out the Music Meadow Sunday night, Ozomatli had the audience holding peace signs in the air during one heartfelt song and then dancing wildly with the next number.

    Did you know last Thursday, July 1, marked the two-year anniversary of California’s hands-free law? According to California Highway Patrol statistics, far too many motorists “are still not dialed-in to the rules and are either being cited for it or becoming a grim statistic.”

But in the midst of these festivities, how many of us take a moment to think of why we are celebrating this day?
