Thin Ice
I had planned on writing about ice fishing this week. Reports from both Davis and Frenchman indicate angler success has recently been quite good.
But the recent unseasonably warm weather is melting the ice. The ice is still there, but it is thinner and getting more thin with each warm day.
My advice....unless you really know what you are doing, stay off the ice. Falling through thin ice can ruin your entire day.
Hunting exotic ranch animals on private lands?
Q.What is the law in regard to hunting “exotic ranch animals” on private lands? I see an advertisement for hunts (pigs, goats, etc.) with no tags or licenses required. These hunts are offered 24/7 year-round. How can this be legal?

A.Imported animals that are not native to California and that are put behind a confining fence are not classified as either game or non-game wildlife.
1/19/2011 - The Portola varsity girl’s basketball team has added five more wins to improve their record to 15 and 1 with non-league victories over North Tahoe, Incline, Loyalton, Chester and Durham.
On Jan. 3, the Portola girls handily defeated the North Tahoe Lakers 56 to 20. The Lady Tigers lead all the way, increasing their lead each quarter. Emma Briggs lead the Lady Tigers in scoring with 18 points, Lucy Wilbanks put 12 through the hoop, Lindsay Compton drained 10, and Camry Housel tallied eight. Wilbanks and Housel grabbed seven boards each with Compton pulling down six, and Briggs grabbing four rebounds.

The Quincy and Portola High School ski teams had their first race of the season Monday, Jan. 3, when they competed in Giant Slalom at Northstar.
In the men's division, more than 50 skiers raced. Quincy and Portola earned five of the top 15 positions.
Garrett Hagwood was the fastest local racer of the day, taking sixth place overall for Quincy with a combined time of 2 minutes, 11.27 seconds.
Portola's Tyler Atkins was next, clocking a combined time of 2:13.12 for eighth place.

In their first game back after winter break, the Feather River College women's basketball team earned a 69-65 victory at home against Porterville last Friday, Jan. 7.
"We needed that," said FRC coach Haley White. "It started 2011 on a good note."
The FRC Golden Eagles fell behind by 13 points in the first half, but found their focus in the second half to register the 4-point win.
"We were excited to play, but we weren't focused and came out flat," said White. "After I encouraged our players at halftime to limit turnovers and make good shot selections, we came out and pecked away at [Porterville's] lead."
