Chester pavement restoration project to begin soon

Aug. 2, 2012 — Caltrans and contractor Hat Creek Construction anticipate construction to begin on the Chester Pavement Restoration project in mid-August.

Beginning Friday, Aug. 3, motorists will see preliminary work taking place, which could include short lane closures between 5:30 a.m. and 3 p.m., with minimal delays of up to five minutes.

The $3 million project will restore pavement on State Route (SR) 36 in Plumas County, from the overflow drainage canal through Chester, to the causeway across Lake Almanor. Construction completion is expected in November 2012.

The project will consist of a "Cold in Place Recycle Process,” which takes existing pavement and reuses it as part of the base material prior to paving.

The recycling process saves costs that would typically occur from grinding the existing pavement and disposing of the material as waste.

The new recycled material becomes the new base material for placing the new “Hot Mix Asphalt,” adding an additional structural section to the roadway.

This new structural section will last longer and require less maintenance in future years.
