Caribou Road Closed to Through Traffic at Gansner Bar in Plumas County

Feather Publishing
6/8/2011

Caribou Road, a U.S. Forest Service Road from Caribou Corners on Highway 70 to the Butt Valley Reservoir region in Plumas County, will be closed to through traffic starting at about 6 a.m. on Thursday, June 9 until about 8 p.m. on Friday, June 10.

The road will be closed from Highway 70 for about a quarter mile to just beyond the Gansner Fish Barrier. Caribou Road will be open from the Butt Valley Reservoir region, but can only be accessed by four-wheel drive vehicles due to recent wet weather.

The road closure is necessary due to heavy equipment in use while PG&E crews make emergency repairs to the fish barrier on the North Fork of the Feather River.
The three U.S. Forest Service campgrounds near the fish barrier – Gansner Bar, North Fork and Queen Lily – will be open, but only accessible from the north side of Caribou Road. The Hallsted Campground is available, 10 miles east on Highway 70.

PG&E is posting “road closed ahead” signs along Prattville-Butt Dam Road and Seneca Road from near Highway 89, as well as on Caribou Road just north of Caribou.

PG&E is making emergency repairs to a fish barrier by reinforcing the structure, which appears to have been damaged by recent heavy river flows. Instead of spilling over the top of the barrier, much of the water is flowing through and under the barrier, creating a potential safety hazard. PG&E has fenced off the area and has posted flyers advising people to stay out of the water above the barrier.
