Early snows limit access for Christmas tree cutters

Feather Publishing

Christmas tree cutters are being advised to practice extra caution during their outings to the Plumas National Forest. Due to the recent snow storms that have blanketed the Sierras with 2-3 feet of fresh snow, most higher-elevation cutting locations on the Plumas National Forest are currently inaccessible, making them impassable to most motor vehicles, including four-wheel drive vehicles.

The following areas on the Beckwourth Ranger District are currently inaccessible:
Willow Creek Rd north of Hwy 70 (Forest Rd.  24N12)

Grizzly Rd at Lake Davis north of Bagley Pass (Forest Rd. 24N08)

Gold Lake Hwy (County Rd. 519) beyond the staging area (approx 3 miles from Hwy 89)

Areas in close proximity to plowed roads and currently provide limited access include:
Gold Lake Highway, (plowed to the Staging Area only and accessible only by snowmobile thereafter)
Lake Davis has limited access on both sides of the lake from the dam cutoff road on the east side and the Camp 5 access road on the west side. Four wheel-drive  vehicles, chains, snowmobiles, walking, snowshoes or skis are advised
Frenchman Lake has limited access from the dam cutoff road around the lake

The following areas on the Mt. Hough Ranger District are currently inaccessible due to snow:

Quincy & Bucks Lake Area
Big Creek Rd. (County Rd. 423) past Staging Area (accessible to Staging Area)
Snake Lake Rd. (County Rd. 422)
Slate Creek Rd. (Forest Rd. 24N28)
Deane’s Valley Rd. (Forest Rd. 24N29)
Silver Lake Rd. (Forest Rd. 24N29X)
Squirrel Creek Rd. (County Rd. 401)
Massack Rd. (Forest Rd. 25N41)

Antelope Lake, Indian & Genesse Valleys
Upper portions of Nye Rd. past Brady’s Camp (Forest Rd. 25N42).
Antelope area – upper portions of Hungry Creek (Forest Rd. 27N09)
Indian Valley area – upper portions of Keddie Ridge Rd (Forest Rd. 28N23)
South of Canyon Dam – approximately 2 miles down the Seneca Road (County Rd 306).

Some roads in close proximity to plowed roads may provide limited access. In the Bucks Lake area, Bucks Lake Road (County Rd. 414) is accessible only up to Bucks Summit.

The Feather River Ranger District reports the following conditions:
Travel off Oro-Quincy Highway (County Rd. 119) is limited by deep snow approximately 1/2 mile east of Mountain House
Access to Four Trees (various access routes) is only available via snowmobile
Lumpkin Ridge access (Forest Rd. 22N27) is limited by deep snow. Land north and south of Lumpkin Ridge is privately owned timber land and not open for Christmas Tree cutting
La Porte Rd. (County Rd. 120) is plowed and open to the town of La Porte, but tree cutters should expect deep snow on either side of the road.  The road is open only to snowmobiles past the La Porte Snowmobile Staging Area

Christmas tree cutting permits will continue to be sold at the Forest Supervisor’s Office and at District Offices, also at selected local vendors. For more information: .
