TAC: 911985 PUB: 9/01 9/08 9/15 Published PR Sept. 1, 8, 15, 2010 Water quality notice IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR DRINKING WATER July 2010 The Plumas Eureka Community Services District Domestic Water System Has Levels of Arsenic Above the Federal Drinking Water Standard Our domestic water system recently violated the new federal drinking water standard for arsenic. Although this is not an emergency, you have the right to know what happened, what you should do, and what we are doing to correct this situation. What happened? The USEPA standard, enacted in January 2006, lowered the maximum contaminant level (MCL) of arsenic from 0.050 milligrams per liter (mg/l) to 0.010 mg/l. This standard was adopted by the state on November 28, 2008. We routinely monitor for the presence of drinking water contaminants throughout the year. Our results indicate the 2010 second quarter average (Apr, May, Jun) Well #2 is 0.015 mg/l, which is above the current federal and state standard. What should I do? You do not need to use an alternative water supply (e.g., bottled water). This is not an emergency. If it had been, you would have been notified immediately. However, some people who drink water containing arsenic in excess of the MCL over many years may experience skin damage or circulatory system problems, and may have an increased risk to getting cancer. If you have other health issues concerning the consumption of this water, you may wish to consult your doctor. What is being done? PECSD is continuing to work with Plumas GeoHydrology and ECO:LOGIC Engineering in an effort to find alternative drinking water sources with little or no arsenic. We are currently out for bids to drill two test wells within Plumas Eureka CSD borders. The drilling bids are due by 3:00pm on August 10, 2010. The bids will be opened and read at a public opening beginning at 3:05pm on the same day. Awarding the bid is anticipated to take place at the August 4, 2010 Board meeting. Please feel free to contact me at 836-4113 if you have any questions or need further information. Respectfully, Frank Motzkus General Manager Plumas Eureka CSD Published PR Sept. 1, 2010
