Indian Valley businessman Frederik Karel Schoordyk tragically succumbed to injuries incurred in an auto accident Monday morning, Aug. 16, 2010, outside of Crescent Mills. He was 86 years old.
A native of the Netherlands, Fred was born in Amsterdam April 8, 1924, to the late Anthonius and Sietske (Junge) Schoordyk. Fred was raised and educated in Holland, where he developed a great love for the game of soccer and found great enjoyment in coaching youth in the game.
Fred has been eternally grateful to the nurses of a local Netherlands hospital who hid him from the German forces as he worked as a medic. He lost two brothers to the German war effort.
In 1951, he immigrated to the United States, settling in the San Francisco East Bay where he resided in the communities of Pacifica and Oakland before moving to the Northeastern California community of Greenville, in the year 1990.
In 1971, while in need of a broker in the real estate business Fred was managing, he hired a talented and pretty Jeannie Ragsdale. That encounter led to the couple's marriage in San Francisco, April 30, 1976.
Fred immediately became active in his community serving as a member and as the treasurer of the Indian Valley Chamber of Commerce, was a strong supporter of Rotary International, serving the Greenville Rotary Club as their longtime secretary/treasurer. He was honored with the prestigious Paul Harris Fellowship award for his dedication to the principals of Rotary.
A staunch supporter of the Indian Valley Health Care District, Fred served as a member of the hospitals strategic planning committee was a member of the Friends of Indian Valley Hospital District, helped in the Indian Valley Food Pantry and was a former director of the Greenville chapter of the AARP. He attended the Greenville Community United Methodist Church before becoming a member of the Greenville Southern Baptist Church.
A longtime trusted and respected real estate broker in the area, Fred took his trade to heart and took great pride in meticulously following up on all details.
In passing, Fred leaves his wife, Jeannie, of Greenville; daughter, Sietske Elsabe Cecelia Schoordyk of Texas; son, Gerrit Schoordyk of Phoenix, Ariz.; sisters Sietske Gerritsen, Amsterdam, Netherlands, Rie Van Dolder of Enschede, Netherlands; sister-in-law, Fenna Schoordyk of Davis, along with one precious grandchild.
A celebration of Fred's life was held Tuesday, Aug. 24, at the Greenville Southern Baptist Church.

Lela Virginia Schwahn, of Wheatland, died Aug 5, 2010, at Rideout Hospital, Marysville.
She was born Sept 13, 1932, in McKinney, Texas.
Survivors include her daughters, Jo Moniz of Wheatland, Susie Petray of Salmon, Idaho, and Teresa Combs of Pawhuske, Okla.; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild; and brothers Bedford Nelson, of Mesa, Ariz., Ross Nelson, of Chico.
She was preceded in death by grandson, Cody Moniz, brothers Jack Nelson and Ray Nelson, and sisters Wiletta Martin, Nita Hahnes and Barbara Grundy.
A celebration of life was held Aug. 22, in Wheatland.
