Water quality notice

Tests showed Coliform Bacteria in the Grizzly Lake Resort Improvement District's Crocker/Welch Water System

Our water system has violated a drinking water standard in several previous months. Although these incidents were not emergencies, as our customers you have a right to know what happened and what we are ding to correct this situation. We routinely monitor for drinking water contaminants in the District's water system. In December 209 and January 2010 more than one bacteriological sample collected from the District's water distribution system during these months contained total coliform bacteria. The standard is that no more than one sample per month may show the presence of coliform bacteria.

What Should You Do?

You do not need to boil your water or take other corrective actions. However, if you have specific health concerns, consult your doctor.

People with severely compromised immune systems, infants and some elderly may be at increased risk. These people should seek advice about drinking water from their health care providers. General guidelines on ways to lessen the risk of infection by microbes are available from EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline at (800) 425-4791.

What Does This Mean?

This is not an emergency. If it had been, you would have been notified immediately. Coliform bacteria are generally not harmful themselves. Coliforms are bacteria which are naturally present in the environment and are used as an indicator that other, potentially harmful, bacteria may be present. Coliforms were found in more samples than allowed and this was a warning of potential problems.

Usually, Coliforms are a sign that there could be a problem with the system's source (spring), storage (tank) or distribution system (pipes). Whenever we detect coliform bacteria in any sample, we do follow-up testing to see if other bacteria of greater concern, such as fecal coliform or E. coli, are present. We did not find any of these bacteria in our testing.

What Happened? What Was Done?

During each of the months total coliform bacteria was detected in the system we collected more samples to determine the location of the contamination, inspected our facilities for obvious signs of contamination, flushed the system and in some cases disinfected the system. While we have not located the source of this sporadic contamination, we have determined a possible source of the contamination may be private wells in operation within our service area. These private wells may have the ability to pump water into our distribution system which could lead to contamination. In an effort to prevent this type of contamination, we will soon be sending our customers a questionnaire to determine the extent of potential contaminating activities such as private wells within the distribution system which could be causing this contamination. Bacteriological sampling in March, April, May and June to date has shown the water to be in compliance with state regulations regarding water quality.

Notice is given that Mitigated Negative Declaration 647 has determined that this project, as mitigated, will not have a significant effect on the environment. This document was previously circulated.

The project is located at 73077 State Highway 70, Delleker, CA; Assessor's Parcel Numbers 025-091-004, 025-091-005 and 025-091-006; T22, 23N/R1 3E/Sections 3,33,34 MDM.

The project is a Tentative Parcel Map to divide 216.09 acres into four parcels of 73.13 acres, 63.56 acres, 71.03 acres, 22.33 acres and a remainder parcel of 8.37 acres. The site is currently undeveloped, with the exception of project roadways and two wells. This parcel consists of resulting Parcel 4, created by lot line adjustment, recorded at 2007-009704.
