Prescribed burns happening

Susanville & Chester, CA - The Lassen National Forest's Almanor Ranger District is planning on implementing a prescribed burn in the Betty Sue project area. The project's south end is located three miles north of Westwood and extends three miles north, directly west of Highway A-21. Up to 650 acres could be burned over the course of several days. Ignition could start as early as June 9th. Watch for smoke on A-21 as well as Highway 36 in the vicinity of Westwood.

The Almanor Ranger District appreciates the continued patience of the community as we implement this burn to reduce hazardous fuel accumulations in an effort to maintain the integrity of existing fuel breaks.

WHO: Almanor Ranger District

WHAT: 650 Acre Prescribed Burn

WHERE: Betty Sue Project Area; Three miles north of Westwood, directly west of Highway A-21

WHEN: As soon as June 9th. Ignition could occur anytime during the month of June, weather permitting

WATCH FOR: -Smoke on Highway A-21 and Highway 36

-Firefighters and firefighting equipment along the roads

Eagle Lake Ranger District plans two prescribed burns:

The Eagle Lake RD may begin to initiate the Crater Underburn near Bogard Work Center on Monday, June 7th. Ignition dates and acreage estimates may change depending on conditions and resource availability. Weather permitting; the Signal Underburn would be initiated after the proposed units for the Crater Underburn are completed.

Descriptive Location: Crater Mountain, southwest side.

Type of burn: Understory Burn: timber litter and some brush

Total Acreage: 200

Planned Ignition: Starting June 7th through June 11th.

Duration of Ignition and Smoke Production: 2-4 days after the completion of the burn units.

Estimated Direction of Smoke Travel: North, Northeast

Communities or Smoke Sensitive Areas: Smoke will be visiblefrom Hwy 44 near Bogard Work Center.

T33N/R10E/ Sec.1,2 and 11.

Descriptive Location: Dow Butte Lookout, northeast side of Dow Butte.

Type of burn: Understory Burn: timber litter and some brush.

Total Acreage: 200-300

Planned Ignition: Starting June 8th through June 11th.

Duration of Ignition and Smoke Production: 2-4 days after the completion of the burn units.

Estimated Direction of Smoke Travel: North, Northeast

Communities or Smoke Sensitive Areas: Smoke will be visiblefrom County Rd. A1 and the community of Spaulding (Eagle Lake Basin). The Smoke Sensitive Areas are the Eagle Lake Basin, Spaulding, and Susanville. The Eagle Lake Ranger District appreciates the continued patience of the communities.
