Portola Tigers advance to title game
Portola pitcher Jarrod Fleisher earned the win in the Tigers’ semifinal game May 18.5/26/2010 - The Portola High School baseball team took second place in the Northern Section Division IV baseball playoffs, after falling 8-4 in the title game against East Nicolaus last Saturday, May 22, at Shasta College in Redding.
The game started out rough for the Portola Tigers, as East Nicolaus scored five runs in the top of the first inning.
Portola earned one run in the bottom of the fifth inning, and East Nicolaus added one run in the top of the second to take a 6-1 lead.
From there, the Tigers held East Nicolaus scoreless through the next three innings, while claiming three runs in the bottom of the fifth to cut East Nicolaus’ lead to 6-4.
East Nicolaus finished out the scoring with two runs in the top of the sixth.
Portola advanced to the championship game by defeating Biggs 10-6 in the semifinals May 18 in Portola.
With bases loaded in the bottom of the first inning, Dillon Soares connected with a full-count pitch and snuck a grounder between the third baseman and shortstop for one RBI, giving the Tigers a 1-0 lead.
After the second and third innings went scoreless, Portola extended its lead to 3-0 with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Biggs got on the board with two runs in the fifth inning to make the score 3-2, but the Tigers answered back with three runs in the bottom of the fifth and four runs in the bottom of the sixth to extend their lead to 10-2.
Biggs attempted a rally with four runs in the seventh frame, but Portola eventually closed the inning to preserve the win.
Portola pitcher Jarrod Fleisher earned the win by going four and one-third innings against 19 batters, giving up no hits and one earned run.
Soares and Clinton Morris closed out the pitching for the Tigers.
Soares led Portola’s offense with four hits, three RBIs, two runs and a triple. Heskett earned two hits, both of which went for triples, and scored two runs.
Billy Broad, Piero Selvaggio and Les Carr each registered one hit and one RBI. Klint Williams and Rickey Lowdermilk each added one RBI.
After going undefeated in the Feather River League to win the league title, the Portola Tigers completed their season with an overall record of 21-9.
