Local youths win big in rodeo events

Team roping partners and friends Shasta Banchio and Tanner Meigs tied for first place on their first go of team roping at the High School District Shoot Out in Red Bluff on Feb. 15.

The two, members of the Greenville High School rodeo team and District 1 California High School Rodeo, competed in the event that included more than 100 entries and brought home Shoot Out jackets. District 1 includes Plumas, Modoc, Shasta, Lassen, Tehama, Trinity, Butte, Glenn Colusa and Siskiyou counties.

Meigs went back the following weekend to Red Bluff to compete in Cattle Days Rodeo; he came home with the all-around cowboy buckle and $300 cash. This was Meigs’ fifth all-around cowboy win. He has earned two saddles and three buckles since 2012.

Meigs hit the road again, traveling to Oakdale on March 2 to compete in timed events — header, heeler and tie-down roping — and placing in the top 13.
