Quincy library patrons can kiss their Internet woes goodbye now that high-speed fiber optic Internet service has arrived.

County librarian Lynn Sheehy announced the arrival Feb. 5 of new high-speed service made possible by the installation of Plumas-Sierra Telecommunications’ fiber optic network.

The revolutionary fiber optic communications system was first developed in the 1970s. It transmits information from one place to another by sending pulses of light along fiber optic cable. Researchers say information can be transmitted at speeds up to 99.7 percent of the speed of light, or 73.7 terabits per second.

Sheehy said the fiber optic network provides 50 megabytesof broadband service to the library. She said the bugs have been worked out and high-speed Internet access is now available in the community meeting room at the library as well as at its bank of public computers.

Wi-Fi and the computers are now much faster than they have been over the past few months. Sheehy invites the community to come to the library and check it out.
