A third candidate emerges for District 5 supervisor

And now there are three.

Three candidates have picked up papers to run for District 5 supervisor, representing the Graeagle area and a portion of East Quincy, but will they?

Thus far incumbent Jon Kennedy, businessman Jim Judd and longtime area resident Jeff Engel have taken forms from the clerk-recorder’s office, which allow them to begin collecting in-lieu signatures.

The signatures offset a portion of filing fees, but the official period to file declarations of candidacy doesn’t begin until Feb. 10 and closes March 7.

Candidates do not have to take out in-lieu papers. County Clerk Kathy Williams said that while it is an indication that someone is interested in the position, it doesn’t mean that they will actually run. “Sometimes they just want to test the water,” she said.

Sherrie Thrall, the incumbent supervisor for District 3, representing the Lake Almanor area, plans to bypass the in-lieu process and simply file for the position.

Most of the incumbents for the county’s other elected positions have taken out in-lieu paperwork, including Sheriff Greg Hagwood, District Attorney David Hollister, Clerk-Recorder Kathy Williams, Treasurer Julie White and County Office of Education Superintendent Micheline Miglis. Assessor Chuck Leonhardt and Auditor Roberta Allen have indicated that they will run to retain their positions.

Election day is June 3, with vote-by-mail ballots going out May 5.
