Both Feather River College soccer teams were a little off their game Tuesday, Oct. 8, against Shasta College. Feather River’s rankings and standings point to the Eagles being the better program, yet both teams finished their matches with draws.

FRC’s men tied Shasta 1-1 in a match where both goalkeepers truly showed off their abilities. FRC’s women tied with Shasta 3-3. Both of Feather River’s teams still lead the Golden Valley Conference and are undefeated in conference play.

The Feather River men’s team scored right off the bat, sending Shasta a message. Justin Hughes got one in off an assist by Seon Ripley. Shasta evened up the score at the end of the first half.

The second half was mainly played in the middle of the field until the last few minutes of the game. FRC barraged Shasta’s goalkeeper, Nathan Bachand, with shots, but Bachand managed to block every one of them.

“I really have to hand it to Shasta’s goalkeeper,” commented FRC’s coach, Don Williams. “He was fantastic. He really put a stop to all our opportunities.”

Feather River’s women got an early lead, which they gave up to fall behind by one. FRC scored two goals in the first half-hour of the match. Shasta rebounded with two goals within three minutes toward the end of the half. Shasta then scored one more to lead by one until FRC eventually evened it up in the 68th minute.

Leslie Raygoza, Ryann Abeyta and Sherifa Sumaila scored for FRC.

“We did struggle through the game. What really got us was three bad mistakes at our goal,” explained Williams.

Both teams will travel to Susanville this Friday to take on Lassen College. The last time the two schools played each other FRC won both matches by a single goal.
