Longtime Chester resident and educator Ellen Jane Grahlman passed from this life peacefully, at Seneca Health Care District Hospital Friday evening, May 17, 2013, at the age of 91.

Born in Seattle, Wash., on Oct. 26, 1921, to the late James and Florence (Hanson) Harrington, her father served a career in the military and the family traveled extensively throughout the world.

Ellen graduated from Vallejo High School as a member of the Class of 1939 and went on to attend college at the College of Pacific where she obtained her Bachelors of Science Degree in Chemistry.

It is while attending college she fell in love with her tutor in physics — a handsome young gentleman named Robert R. Grahlman — and the couple were united in matrimony on April 14, 1946, on the Campus of the College of the Pacific. To this union two daughters were born.

The newlyweds later moved to Berkeley where Richard continued his education. In 1948, following Robert’s graduation, the couple moved to the northeastern California lumber community of Chester where Richard took employment as a forester with the Collins family at their Chester Mill.

First and foremost a loving wife and mother who always kept her family first, as Ellen’s family grew up she began what became a 14-year career with the Plumas Unified School District as a home economics teacher at their Chester High School campus, a job that let her share her love of cooking and her talent as a seamstress. She retired in 1981.

Ellen enjoyed the outdoors thru hiking and fishing as well as traveling throughout the West with her husband.

In passing, Ellen leaves her loving husband of 67 years, Robert, of Chester; daughters Peggy Leonard and her husband John, of Grass Valley, Linda Halbert and her husband Jay, of Chico; her cherished grandchildren, Sage Hopkins and his wife Tammy, Holli Anderson and her husband Beau, and Bryn Alexander and her husband Jesse, along with her equally cherished great-grandchildren Venice, Gunner, Chance, Broen, Landon and Summer.

Along with her parents, she joins a sister in their eternal home.

Private family services will take place at a later date. An opportunity to express your condolences to the family along with signing the memorial guest register is available online at fehrmanmortuary.com.
