Bank of America to close Portola branch

Bank of America announced Friday that it will close its Portola branch on June 28.

A spokesperson for the bank said the decision to close the local banking center on West Sierra Street was due to declining business.

“The decision to close this banking center was not an easy one,” said Bank of America spokesperson Colleen Haggerty. “It was driven primarily by a decline in transactions, as customers increasingly rely on other channels such as mobile and online banking.”

Haggerty said customers are being notified “more than 90 days in advance to give them ample time to become familiar with their banking options.”

She said customers with additional questions could go to the banking center and talk to a bank employee.

Yea, just like we were first to be notified about the closure by them instead of having to read it in the paper online.

Grr - if you would have gone into the bank last week, they would have told you. Just FYI - I am a customer and was told.
If we don't support our local economy, businesses will continue to fail. Support the local guys and we can keep Portola running.

To be fair, that is true, I did not physically go into the bank last week. I used the ATM. Still though, something sent out would have been nice. Will the ATM machine remain in Portola? That's my main concern. I don't want to have to switch banks.

The true local business is Plumas Bank. The decline is more a problem of BofA being a corporation and not supporting the community. The employees were mostly great, but the bank's policies do not fit with a small community. It is cheaper and easier to get money from a credit or local bank.
