National retailer to open stores in Chester, Quincy

Area residents will soon have another shopping option — Tennessee-based Dollar General plans to open two stores this fall in Plumas County.

Dollar General will open 7,000-square-foot stores in Chester and Quincy, and expects to employ eight to 10 people at each location.

The company, which boasts 10,000 stores nationwide, targets rural areas. The stores offer name brand products at reduced prices.

Company spokesman Dan MacDonald said that Dollar General is not to be confused with Dollar Tree.

“About 20 percent of our items are $1 or less, while 80 percent is not,” he said.

MacDonald said that Dollar General could be best described as a small box store. “Our prices are about comparable to Wal-Mart, but our stores are smaller,” he said.

Does anyone know what buildings the businesses are going to be located in?

The one in Chester is going to be where the bowling alley is located. I don't know for sure how many people worked at the bowling alley, but I'm fairly sure it will be a net employment loss. Not to mention the loss of the bowling alley and all that goes with it.!

The Quincy location is the former American Valley Hardware building to the west of Sav Mor. A brick building is at the front of the lot.

Happy to hear something affordable coming to Chester area. I would rather have a value pricing store than the trashy, party, drunk central bowling alley any day. You couldn't go in there with a family unless you wanted to deal with the local drunks and partiers.

These stores will provide reasonable shopping prices. Its about time Plumas county got a few stores that locals can afford to shop.

Why do I get the feeling that the people most supportive of this are those that have lived here the least amount of time?

Probably has something to do with the fact that transplanted suburbanites are the most comfortable with soul-less corporatism devouring everything.

Yea it's a shame that stupid yuppies would want an affordable and nearby shopping alternative. And it would be really stupid if it created some jobs in areas where those are hard to come by. Dang surburbanites...and liberals.

You know what? There is an affordable shopping alternative nearby - we already have a dollar store.

And the meager handful of jobs created won't compensate for the money lost to existing businesses, especially when that money is sent out of town to a national chain.

I am not happy to see one business be replace especially since the bowling alley has been viable for years. Why not put it in the shopping cdnter next to Mi Casita that has been empty for years.

what next? A WalMart,a 100 man jail project in Quincy, etc. We managed this life for years without franchises, now County Officials and Metro transplants are quick to turn Quincy into a city that the majority of long time locals are against. This is the Country. Metro mentality does not belong here.

Except that Dollar General can trace it's corporate lineage to Goldman Sachs. The unfair advantage is they received TARP and federal bailout money. Did you or other local businesses in Plumas receive this money? This expansion brought to you by the average taxpayer.

I don't have anything against this franchise coming to Chester. I have everything against it replacing the bowling alley. Balance is everything, and we shouldn't have to lose recreation for shopping. I guess people will just take their business to Lassen County.

Maybe I'll just continue to shop at Walmart when I go to Susanville to go bowling. That's a lose-lose for Plumas County.

REPLY you're quite wrong. I have lived in Chester over 25 years. We need some fair pricing for shopping.

I wish more big retail chains were allowed to come to this county. Maybe even some decent eateries too! Fast food chains would do great(with a drive-thru)! The jobs and tax revenue would grow again and the county wouldn't be in such financial hurt. Growth is needed to prosper people.

I would rather have a local family have a diner or business than the corporate giant coming in and underpricing to drive others out. Fast food companies in the U.S. are subsidized by the gov't. You can't compete. It's low quality all around. So yeah, I'd rather have nothing than [censored].

Sure, let's bring in walmart, kmart, bimart, shopko, chuckeecheesehead, and all that other [censored] until this place homogenizes into looking like every other town in America. They'll all hafta fit in EQ and downtown will become a hisoric district full of empty stores or trinket shops.

What everyone is forgetting is that the bowling alley has been for sale for years. No one has wanted to buy it. Dollar General fair and square bought the business. Do not be mad at DG wanting to expand their business, be mad at the BA owners for selling out. Its done now & we must accept it.

while I love shopping for organic items at Holiday other stuff is way overpriced. I'm happy to have affordable options. These little local stores are a ripoff. Dog store is the only one that doesn't totally rip people off. They make it conveinent for locals and have compatible prices

Went into that green store the other day to buy a gift. Saw one of those button bracelets like u can get in Mexico for like $1. It was $40. Most of these their items are from china. These stores sell the same mexico/china crud but put a higher 10x the price because its "in the mountains"

Quit freaking out already! So many people already travel to Chico, Reno and Susanville for lower priced goods, what's wrong with a little competition to encourage local shops to offer fair prices?

Who's freaking out? I don't see anyone freaking out, just sharing their opinions. Differing opinions don't mean people are freaking out or stupid and to believe so makes that person ignorant and intolerant.
