  Portola faced its toughest football game of the season on Friday, Oct. 19 when the Tigers defeated Maxwell, 27-21.

  Maxwell ensured Portola would work at gaining a victory.

  Portola scored first when Klint Williams capped a first-quarter drive with a two-yard touchdown run to give the Tigers a 6-0 lead. The extra point was no good.

  Maxwell scored before the half ended, and made the extra point, to take a 7-6 lead at the half. It was the first time this season that Portola trailed an opponent at the half.

  The Tigers were bound and determined to win and came out fighting in the second half.

  Zack Martinez led the Tigers with a total of three touchdowns. In the third quarter Martinez rushed 62 yards for the touchdown. Martinez subsequently ran the ball in for a two-point conversion.

  Martinez scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, one a 53-yard run and the other a 10-yard run.

  Maxwell scored twice in the second half but was unable to keep up with the Tigers.

  “We had more turnovers in this one game than we’ve had all season,” said Portola’s coach, Steve Heskett. “We battled the whole game, though, and still came away with a win against a very good football team while on the road.”

  Portola’s varsity team has a bye this week and will host Chester on Nov. 2.

Colusa 49, Quincy 36

  The Quincy Trojans traveled to Colusa on Oct. 19 and came away with a loss. Quincy had high hopes for a victory after its Oct. 12 win against East Nicolaus.

  Colusa’s offense was too much for Quincy’s defense as Colusa scored seven touchdowns.

  Quincy’s offense fought hard as well, scoring five touchdowns.

  David Hannah scored two touchdowns; one receiving and one rushing. Keston Pilgrim ran one touchdown in. Cody McDonald and Matt Beeson both scored touchdowns in addition.

  Quincy’s homecoming game takes place Friday, Oct. 26, against Williams at 7:30 p.m.

Chester wins by forfiet

  A varsity game against Los Molinos was scheduled for Oct. 19, but Los Molinos forfeited. Los Molinos canceled its varsity season this year.

  Chester travels to Redding Oct. 26 to take on University Prep.
