Though Social Services Director Elliott Smart received authorization to fill more vacant positions in his department, it’s not enough.

“This is the seventh time in three years that I have been talking to you about vacancies,” Smart told the Plumas County Board of Supervisors on Aug. 12. “We are approaching a crisis situation in child welfare.”

Supervisors object to Bay Delta Plan

Fair taxation and senior water rights are the top two concerns Plumas County leaders address in a letter regarding the Bay Delta Conservation Plan.

The letter, which was submitted to meet a July 29 deadline and ratified by the Board of Supervisors on Aug. 12, recommends that both the plan and its environmental documents be “withdrawn, redesigned, reanalyzed, and recirculated for at least 120 days of public comment.”

Request for letters supporting embezzlement sentencing sent

Former Plumas County District Attorney James Reichle has volunteered to help recover stolen funds from Indian Valley Community Services District.

Reichle said he will be working under the supervision of the district’s lawyer, Gregory Einhorn, to help establish restitution against former general manager Leanna May Moore.

School district board member resigns

Bob Tuerck resigned his position on the Plumas Unified School District and County Office of Education board of directors during the Aug. 14 meeting held at Pioneer School. Tuerck read his letter of resignation with much emotion, citing the offer of a job for the California School Board Association as his reason.

Tuerck said he is honored to have served on the school board and to have represented the community. He thanked his fellow board members and district staff.

Pack donkeys add historical element to guided walk through Snake Lake area

An eager group of hikers took a walk back in time during a guided hike highlighting ecological, historical and cultural aspects of the Snake Lake area.

Plumas County Museum Director Scott Lawson and his son Sam led their two pack animals and 16 interested hikers on an 8-mile walk from the former townsite of New Boston to Snake Lake, Smith Lake and back to New Boston on Friday, Aug. 8.

As Lawson’s two donkeys were packed up with food, water, backpacks and a first aid kit, Lawson told the story of Bonita, the wild donkey he acquired from Navajo country.
