Furry critter may rise to spotted owl status

The status of the American pika, a furry little critter that resembles a rodent, might soon be on par with that of the iconic spotted owl.

Loggers, hunters, miners, cattlemen and other forest users could be among those affected if this happens.

Last call for comment on Portola General Plan update

Portola citizens have until Jan. 11 to comment on the city’s update to its General Plan and the proposed Mitigated Negative Declaration (MND) to its environmental review of the changes.

Public review of the EIR documents began Nov. 30 (with comment taken at the Dec. 14 meeting) and will culminate at the public hearing scheduled for the regular meeting of the Portola City Council at 7 p.m. Jan. 11.

Chico woman killed in Spring Garden crash

The California Highway Patrol is investigating whether marijuana played a role in a vehicle accident early this morning that left one Chico resident dead and another injured.

Kelly M. Larocca, 37, was driving a 2007 Honda Accord westbound on Highway 70 near Squirre l Creek Road at 4:45 a.m. at an unknown rate of speed in cold, intermittently icy conditions. Overhead flashing signs were on and advising of icy conditions.
