Women’s Golf Club Hero game

Enjoying the nice cool weather after the rain Tuesday, Aug. 12, Plumas Pines Women’s Golf Club played a team game, “Hero,” using two low net scores in the foursome. Before the game, one player is marked on each hole of the scorecard, in rotation. The marked player is the hero. That person’s score can be used once, twice or not at all. It was a fun game.

The scores were: First place: Nancy Bartlett, Renee Walker, Bev Parry and Judy Rossi with a net of 113. Second place: Laurie Humphries, Connie Raheb, Jan Pierce and a blind draw of Nancy Bartlett, for a net 124.

Chip-ins were earned by Scooter Kidwell and Bev Parry.

Handicap Championship Tournament

On July 22, the first day of the Plumas Pines Women’s Golf Club Handicap Championship Tournament was held.Eleven players began the three-day tournament, in which the winner would score the lowest cumulative net score.After the three-day event, two players weren’t able to finish, which left nine competing.The overall winner and 2014 handicap champion was Diane Trainor with a three-day score of 226.Janet Holladay was runner-up with a score of 232.In scoring order, the other competitors areJackie Luckey, Nancy Bartlett, Connie Raheb, Renee Walker, Cindy Donohue, Cathy Cianciolo, Janet Grijalva and Bev Parry.Congratulations, Diane, and also to all who participated.

Couples Championship

On July 20, the ninth annual Couples Championship was held at Plumas Pines Golf Resort.Twenty-six members competed in this popular event.To qualify, players needed to be members of the Plumas Pines Men’s and Women’s Golf Club.The format “In the Box” required teams to count one best ball on the par 4’s, both balls on the par 3’s and alternate holes on the par 5’s.

In the first, or Mohawk, flight, first-place winners were Bruce Walker and Jackie Luckey with a score of 71.Second place went to Randy and Sharon Russell with a score of 78, and third place went to John and Scooter Kidwell with a score of 79.

In the second, or Madora, flight, Bill and Janet Grijalva won first place with a score of 73.Second place went to Randy and Katy Magliano with a score of 75, and third place went to Ron and Jennifer Zumbro with a score of 78.

Closest to the hole was awarded on hole No. 7 for the men and was won by Larry Walker who was 12 inches from the hole. For the women, Renee Walker was closest on hole No. 11at 14 feet, 10 inches.

Following golf, a large group of players and additional guests enjoyed a great dinner and awards at Longboards Bar & Grill.The names of the first-place winners were added to the perpetual trophy on display in the pro shop.

Graeagle Meadows Women’s Golf Club

Thursday, Aug. 14, was the final round of the Club Championship.For the 19th time in the last 24 years, Priscilla Piper is the GMWGC club champion.Priscilla swept the field with a three-round gross score of 268.Karen Linde was runner-up with a score of 292.The club champion is the low-gross winner playing from the red tees.In the Red Tee Division, the low-net winners were,first place, Cathy Churchill (215); second place (tie), Cheryl Brennan and JoAnn Lake (224).In the Combo Tee Division, Ann Pratt won low gross with a 288; low-net winners were, first place, Karen Fraser (209); second place, Pat Grew (210).There were many chip-ins over the three rounds, but of special note were Pat Grew’s three chip-ins during the second round. Golf was followed by a lovely celebratory luncheon provided by Chef Scotty and his able crew.

Lake Almanor West Women’s Golf Club

“Under the Big Top” was the theme the ladies’ golf club chose for this year’s tournament at Lake Almanor West. There were 64 participants and many of the four-gal teams were dressed in circus-related apparel, which made for a very colorful sight against Dave Delay’s gorgeously maintained course.

Karen Tratt was the tournament chairperson and the time and effort she put into the tournament showed big time. She was ably assisted by her husband Tom, decorations chair Karen DeMoe and her husband Gordon, Melissa Smith in the pro shop, helpers Arlene Cary and Adrienne Fagalde and many members’ husbands who did cart placement and scoring.

Chef Mike, who runs the West Almanor Grill, served an outstanding breakfast and lunch. He received a big round of applause and many hoots and hollers from the gals for the fabulous food.

First-flight winners were Jakki Thomas, Linda Boone, June Park and Yasuko Zingg with a combined score of 120.

Second place went to Mary Ashburn, Jan Vortman, Jenni Cesarin and Ginger Birchfield with a 121. Shelly Carney, Sue Comming, Jackie Schimmel and Joan Wagoner were third with 121 after a tie breaker. Fourth-place winners were Shirley Friedrichs, Kathi Shennan, Julie Azevedo and Karen Nelson with 129.

First in the second flight were Kathy Roseler, Trudy Leete, Joan Johnson and Joan D’Angelo. Taking second place were Judy Cooper, Peggy Lentz, Judie Crain and Madaline Furman. Third place went to Barbara Leonard, Colette Prentke, Pat Drake and Diane Bice. Fourth-place winners were Jessie King, Kathy Fuller, Martha Vlahos and Karen Schmidt.

Closest-to-the-pin awards went to Madaline Furman with 2 feet, 3 inches on guest hole No. 6, Jackie Schimmel with 8 feet, 5-1/2 inches on guest hole No. 12 and Judy Cooper, 9 feet, 5 inches on member hole No. 15.

Accuracy drive winners were, first flight, Trudy Leete, 6 feet, 8 inches, and, second flight, Barbara Leonard, 2 feet, 7 inches.

After a card-off with two other teams, the team winners of the putting contest were Barbara Leonard, Colette Prentke, Jane Bice and Pat Drake.

Mt. Huff Golf

For sure the golfers welcomed the return of more moderate temperatures to Indian Valley! It was a beautiful, mostly sunny day for the Wednesday Morning Scramble on Aug. 13.

In first place at 5 under par was the team of Mary Trafton, Ron Carter and Leo Sorosinski.

There was a tie for second place at 4 under par between the team of Don McConnell, Ted Trafton and Loren Lindner and the team of Greg Stevens, Dan Rooney and Darel Joseph.

Closest to the pin was won by Dan Rooney, while Ralph Cote and Greg Stevens tied for the chip-in.

The cooler and comfortable weather held out and an excellent turnout once again for the Thursday Evening Scramble on Aug. 14 brought the first-place team of Mike Kearns, Mark Kearns, Pat Stewart and O.J. Medina in at 5 under par.

Second-place ranking at 4 under par was won by Gary McClellan, Lynn McClellan, Kathy Widby and Dan Botts.

In third place, after a deciding chip-off, was the team of Gary Metzdorf, Carol Metzdorf, Jeff Stevens and Greg Stevens.

Closest to the pin was awarded to Mark Kearns and the longest drive was hit by O.J. Medina.

Graeagle Meadows Men’s Wednesday Play Day

The regular Wednesday Men’s Play Day had 40 players in two divisions. The format was individual net and skins. The first-place winner in the White Tee Division was George Fraser with a net score of 65. Second was Tom Slavik (66), and third was Mark Frethy (guest) (68). There were five skins awarded in the White Tee Division, one each to Norm Miller, Den Stevenson, George Fraser, Jack Gilbert and Bill Hopp.

In the Combo Tee Division first place was won by Jack Cornish with a net score of 64. Second was Jim Oster (65), and there was a tie for third between Ron Eaton and Jay Hendrick. There were eight skins awarded in the Combo Tee Division: two to Jack Cornish and one each to Chuck Franck, Ron Eaton, Tom Gossett, Jac Castleton, Bob McIlroy and Ralph Wittick.

There will be no Wednesday Men’s Play Day on Aug. 20 or Aug. 27. Wednesday, Aug. 20, and Thursday, Aug. 21, will be the Couples Club Championship (known as the Guys & Gals), followed by the Home and Home with Plumas Pines (known as the Golden Tomahawk) on Aug. 27 and Aug. 28.
