  Leonard (Len) C. Fairburn was born in Ponchatoula, La., May 12, 1940. He passed away at his residence in Lake Almanor, after a brave battle with cancer Aug. 4, 2010.

  Len had a distinguished career in the Marine Corps. He was an embassy guard in Vienna and Baghdad and a member of a special guard for President John F. Kennedy for which he received a Presidential Unit Citation.

  Len served in Vietnam and received numerous commendations and medals. Len spent five years at Fort Knox where he was one of very few Marines to receive an Army Commendation Medal.  Len also served at Camp Pendleton, Tustin Air Base and El Toro Air Base in Orange County.

  In 1980, Len began a 25-year career in real estate, working for Tarbell, Merrill Lynch and Prudential, in Mission Viejo. Len became a broker and was highly regarded and respected for his hard work, honesty, and good character.

  Len retired from real estate in 2006, and with his wife, Shirley, moved to Lake Almanor,  where he enjoyed fishing  and  the outdoor life style of the Northern California mountains. 

  Len was devoted to home, family, community and country. He was a valiant Marine and a strong Christian. Len will be remembered by family, friends and business associates  for his serious dedication  and integrity as well as his mischievous sense of humor and the twinkle in his eye.

  Len is survived by his wife, Shirley; his daughter, Tara Westersten  (John)  and  his son, Jason Fairburn (Kim) and grandchildren Drake Leonard Westersten,  Dean Raymond Westersten and Stella Jean Fairburn.

  A memorial service was held at Newport Center United Methodist Church, in Corona Del Mar, Tuesday, Aug. 17. Graveside services followed at the Garden of Valor at Pacific View Memorial Park in Corona Del Mar.

A long time Beckwourth resident, Wilburn Edward Cook passed away peacefully on Aug. 6, four days short of his 90th birthday.

  He was born in Pueblo, Colo. on Aug. 10, 1920. He was one of seven children.

  He is survived by his four children and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Also by Maxine Maddalena, his long time companion.

  He was preceded in death by his wife June, three children and six brothers and sisters.

  As a member of the great generation he experienced many adventures such as serving the Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC), living through the depression, serving his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II, raising a family and a career with SP Railroad.

  He loved to cook and write poetry. He also played the organ, harmonica, accordian and the bugle. He was a member of the Elks Lodge, VFW, American Legion, the 40&8 club and many others.

  He was a great person with a big heart and will be sorely missed.

  In lieu of flowers the family requests to the Calpine Elks or charity of your choice. A memorial srvice is pending. Arrangements entrusted to Manni Funeral Home of Portola.

  Russel Paul Brothers, died July 28, 2010, at 2:30 a.m. at the Veteran’s Hospital in Reno, Nev. at age 76.

  He was survived by wife, Mary, of 31 years, also a son, Mike Brothers, and a daughter, Linda Brothers, both from Reno, Nev.

  Russel was born in Grand Junction, Colo.

  At Russ’s request there will be no services held. He was cremated.

  E. Dwaine Branson, born Jan. 22, 1941, in Visalia, died in Portland, Ore. Aug. 8, 2010.

  Branson was a resident of Westwood for 12 years, a resident of Quincy for three.  Branson was predeceased by his wife, Barbara, his parents, Emery and Emma Branson and his brother, Harold Branson.

  He is survived by his daughter, Debbie of West Linn, Ore.; his brother, Jerry of Reno, Nev.; sisters Phyliss Reff of Las Vegas, Nev., and Betty Smith of Pleasant Grove, Utah; several nephews and nieces and two grandchildren.

  There will be a private burial in Portland, Ore., Aug. 19, at 3 p.m. and a memorial Aug. 20 at 11 a.m. at the Willamette Christian Church, 3153 S. Brandywine Dr. in West Linn.

  Memorial donations or contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

  Cleta May Reid, 69, died Monday, Aug. 9, 2010.

  She was born July 28, 1941, in Stigler, Okla.

  She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Lula McMaster, husband, Glenn Reid, three brothers, James McMaster, Don McMaster and Archie McMaster and two infant sisters.

  She is survived by her son, Glen Reid of Lovelock, Nev.; her daughter, Donna George of Olivehurst; step-daughters, Beverly Reid, Anita Weiss, and Jennifer Beis, all of Arizona; two grandchildren; sisters Jo Newman of Marysville and Joan Robinson of Texas; brothers, Jim McMaster of Quincy, and Jerry McMaster of Yuba City, and numerous nieces and nephews.

  A graveside service will held at Greenville Cemetery in Greenville, Thursday, Aug. 19, at 3 p.m. Pastor Fred Kerr will officiate.

  Services are under the direction of Fehrman Mortuary in Quincy.

     Faye Boquist passed away peacefully in San Diego July 21, at the age of 87.
    She was born Norma Faye Martin in a farmhouse on the Columbia River near Wilbur, Washington, the fifth of seven children. Her mother and oldest sister died of typhoid fever when Faye was 11, so she learned to work hard at an early age, out on the farm, during those Depression Years.
    After graduating from high school, she received a four-year scholarship to Holy Names College in Spokane.
    At age 19, she married the tall, thin Swedish star athlete, Arthur Boquist. Art went to war where his ship, the USS Reno, was torpedoed in the Pacific.
    He returned home to Spokane safely, and four children followed: Barry, Scott, April and Matt. They lived in Idaho, Washington and finally settled in the Bay Area.
    Faye went to work as a journalist at the Sunnyvale Standard and later at the San Jose Mercury-News. She received many awards for her writing and met many celebrities, including Ronald Reagan, Roy Rogers, Jayne Mansfield, Duke Ellington, Shirley Temple Black, Ricky Nelson, Mick Jagger, Robert Goulet, Doris Day, Guy Lombardo, Ed Asner, Nelson Eddy (her idol) and many more.
    When she retired in the 1980s, she and Art moved to Quincy, in the mountains.
    She and Art celebrated their 50th anniversary in 1992 at Road Haven Resort in Arizona, where they went for the winters. Just a few years later, Art died of Alzheimer's Disease.
    Faye continued to be active, playing tennis, doing drama, singing and hosting the church teas. She moved to Spokane for a year to spend some time with her sister, Lela Mason, while her daughter built a new home for her in the mountains. She had a series of strokes and moved to The Arbors an assisted-living center in San Diego in 2008.
    She is survived by her son, Barry Boquist of Poway, his wife Vicki, their two daughters, Stephanie and Sarah, Sarah's husband Leighton Pinkham and Faye's great-granddaughter Haley.
    Faye is also survived by her daughter, April Keenan of Sloat, April’s daughter Summer, Summer's husband Dan Rejmanek and Faye's other great-granddaughter Delfina Faye. Faye is also survived by her son, Matt Boquist of Long Beach.
    A memorial service for Faye is scheduled for Sat., Aug. 28, at 1 p.m. at the Quincy Community United Methodist Church. A reception will follow.

    Longtime Quincy resident Calvin Ray Bennett passed from this life suddenly from a pulmonary embolus at Plumas District Hospital July 25, 2010, at the age of 48.
    Born in Grants, N.M., Aug. 3, 1961, to Bonsal and Ann (Reed) Bennett.
    As a young child he and his family relocated to Quincy. Calvin attended grammar and high school in Quincy where he was a member of Quincy High School's graduating class of 1979. While attending high school, Calvin lettered in both football and baseball.
    Calvin began a 28-year career with Union Pacific Railroad immediately following his high school graduation working as a crane operator. A recent auto accident forced him to retire early. Calvin enjoyed placer mining in the streams and creeks in the area as well as occasionally trying his luck in the Reno establishments.
    In passing Calvin leaves his wife of 17 years, Kellie; the jewel of his life, his loving daughter Sherridan Rae Bennett of Quincy; his mother, Ann Shroyer of Winnemucca, Nev.; a brother, Paul Bennett and his longtime companion Cheryl of Truckee; sister, Nelda Archer of Naturita, Colo.; nephews, David Campbell and Sean Manley and niece, Serena Campbell. He was especially proud to be the godfather to Shane and Heather Kelly.
    A celebration of Calvin's life will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 7, at the Pioneer Park located in East Quincy.

    Mrs. Leslie H. Welbourn, 85, of Modoc County, who had moved to Reno, Nev. and Loyalton to be near her son and family, passed away July 28, 2010, at Renown Medical Center in Reno.
    She is survived by her sister-in-law Emma Isbell of Sacramento, three children: Gayle McMaster of Quincy, Linda Welbourn of Roseville, and her son Michael H. Welbourn of Reno, Nev., and Loyalton; grandchildren Laura Miller of Paradise, Diana Ruch of Quincy, Darrel McMaster of Quincy, Mannell Lambert of Roseville and Daron Sullivan of Roseville; and great-grandchildren Sierra, Parker and Morgan McMaster of Quincy and Kateland and Dillon Miller of Paradise.
    Mrs. Welbourn was married 58 years to George H. Welbourn who passed Oct. 9, 2001.
    Services will be held graveside in Manton at a later date.


    Quincy resident Carol Ann Wright, 63, died Wednesday, July 28, 2010, at the Northern Nevada Medical Center in Sparks, Nev.
    She was born in Cleveland, Ohio, June 27, 1947, to Pennsylvania natives Merle and Cora (Powell) Wiegand.
    In passing Carol leaves her son, Paul Wright of Redmond, Ore.; daughters, Connie Sue Smith Quincy, and Sherry Wirth of Sun Prairie, Wis.; her mother, Coral Poole of Quincy; a brother, Gary Wiegand of San Jose; as well as 13 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
    A celebration of Carol's life will take place 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 4, at the Quincy First Baptist Church. Private inurnment will take place in the Quincy East Lawn Cemetery with her late husband Eldon.
