Martin F. Popish, of Graeagle, passed away peacefully in Reno, Nevada, on Aug. 7, 2014, in the company of his family. He was 88 years old. He was born to parents Primosh & Jennie Popish and raised in Aspen, Colorado.
He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers Bernard, Joseph and Edward and his son-in-law Jeff Litz. He is survived by his wife Dolores, sister Lillian, brother Louis, his seven children and their spouses, 14 grandchildren and their spouses and six great-grandchildren.
Martin attended public school in Aspen, Colorado. He volunteered for military service in World War II in May of 1944. He went to naval basic training in Farragut, Idaho, and Radio School at Yerba Buena Island. He served on the USS Fergus, (APA 82) Radioman 3rd Class, and was discharged after two years in 1946. He attended college at the Colorado State Teacher’s College and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in science and mathematics and a master’s degree in mathematics. He and Dolores were married in 1951. He taught at Leadville High School, Leadville, Colorado, for three years.
Martin and Dolores moved to Portola in 1955 with two children. The mountains in Plumas County reminded him of his home in Aspen. He built their first home himself, digging out the basement by hand. He taught at Portola High School for 14 years and Feather River College in Quincy for another 14, retiring from teaching in 1986. In addition to mathematics, he taught cross-country and alpine skiing. He worked for the USDA Forest Service at the Mohawk Ranger Station in the summers from 1966 until 1994.
Services will be held at Holy Family Catholic Church, Saturday, Aug. 23, at 10 a.m., followed by burial at Mohawk Cemetery in Graeagle. Funeral arrangements by Manni Funeral Home, Portola.
