Former Quincy resident Mary M. Lewis,84, passed away onJuly 9, 2014,at her home in Soldotna, Alaska,from cancersurrounded by her family, holding her granddaughters hands. She was born onJune 20, 1930,inMonte Vista, Colorado,toVirgilandFloy Green.

Marygrew up inQuincy and graduated from Quincy High School. She worked in the family bakery while in high school. Mary worked at many jobs in her lifetime and was well-liked by her coworkers. Mary retired from Feather River Community College in 1984. While working for the college, she was selected as the very first Employee of the Year.

Mary was married to Bill Lewis, one of her Quincy High School classmates in 1948. They were happily married for 65years. They had two wonderful daughters, Janie and Janis. Mary and Bill followed their daughters and granddaughters to Soldotna, Alaska, in 1984 where they built their beautiful Justus cedar log home.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Virgil and Floy Green, and only sister Pansy La June Zion.

Mary loved her family and pets first and foremost. Some of her favorite times were with her family during holidays and family dinners. Her favorite holiday was always Christmas. Mary loved pets and always took in any stray no matter what their affliction was. She enjoyed living in Alaska where she fished and camped with her husband and family. Mary grew beautiful flowers, loved baking and cooking, quilted and most of all loved babysitting her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Mary was the matriarch of her family she was kind, loving and generous and touched the hearts of everyone that knew her. Her family stated, “We will miss her greatly, she is our guardian Angel.”

Mary is survived by her daughters, Janie Lewis, Janis Byram and her husband Demie, all of Soldotna; grandchildren Sadie Updike and husband Jesse, of Kenai, Melody Dawn Puckett and husband Jeremy, of Kasilof; great-grandchildren Riley Updike and Neva Puckett; and her nieces and nephews and other relatives.

At Mary’s request, there will be no memorial service.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to an animal shelter of their choice.

Heaven has gained another angel. Mary L. Scalmanini, better known to all as Mare, went to make heaven a little brighter on July 21, 2014. She enjoyed the outdoors and spending time with her grandchildren.

Mare was born in Hollandale, Mississippi, on June 11, 1953, and grew up in Pacifica. She spent the majority of her life in Gardnerville, Nevada, and the last 10 years in Lake Almanor.

She is survived by her loving husband Michael Scalmanini; brother and sister-in-law Butch and Sue Bohlender; nephew Travis; daughters Monica and Melanie Mckenzie; sons Frank and Kevin Scalmanini and daughter-in-law Lorena; grandchildren Hunter, Kyleigh, Cayden, Mark, Ryan, Tyler, Michael, Jordan and great-granddaughter Amelia.

Mare will be greatly missed but will be forever in our hearts. A Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date.

Longtime Clear Creek resident Jane Marie Smith died at the Long Term Care Unit of Seneca Health Care District, Friday, July 25, 2014.

She was born Aug. 31, 1923, in Cincinnati, Ohio, to the late Louis and Carrie (Nussey) Cavanaugh.

Jane is survived by her daughters Judy Smith of Susanville, and Linda Marie Hammar, of Antelope; her brother James Cavanaugh, of Cottage Grove, Oregon, and one grandson.

She was predeceased by her husband Clifford Sr., son Clifford Jr., brother Ralph and sister Grace.

A celebration of Jane’s life will take place at the graveside alongside her late husband and son in the Westwood Cemetery at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 13. An opportunity to express your condolences to the family along with signing the memorial guest register is available online at

A Celebration of Life for Duane McClellan will be held Saturday, Aug. 16, from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. at the Greenville Park.

A Mexican theme luncheon with refreshments will be served. Music will be selected from Duane’s collection.
