The 2011 Tiger Classic basketball tournament was held at Portola High School Thursday through Saturday, Dec. 8 – 10, and featured the teams of Portola, Quincy, Loyalton and Modoc.

Quincy won the varsity boys’ division, Portola won the varsity girls’ competition and Modoc took both the boys’ and girls’ junior varsity brackets.

In the varsity boys’ division, Quincy went 3-0 by defeating Loyalton 66-39, Modoc 46-43 and Portola 47-43.

The Portola varsity boys finished 0-3 after also losing to Modoc 66-43 and Loyalton 45-43.

‘Alabama Rig’

Question: A recent innovation on the pro bass-fishing trail is something called the “Alabama Rig,” which is similar to what is called an “Umbrella Rig” by saltwater anglers. The Alabama Rig consists of five or six lures (usually plastic grubs or small swimbaits) radiating from a central attachment point by wires, imitating a school of baitfish. It looks very similar to a “mobile” that you might suspend above a baby’s crib. Since all the lures have hooks in them, would this rig be legal for inland/freshwater fishing in California for bass or other species?

Lassen National Forest officials announced last week that boaters looking to use Eagle Lake now have a place to launch during low water conditions thanks to a recently completed boat ramp adjacent to the Gallatin Marina.

The new low-water boat ramp was made possible by the California Department of Boating and Waterways (CalBoating), which funded and prepared designs and specifications for the project.

The Chester High School wrestling team took fifth place out of 21 schools at the 40th annual Chester wrestling tournament Friday and Saturday, Dec. 2 – 3.

Chico High School won the tournament, followed by Fernley High School in second place and Lassen High School in third.

Chester’s Westley Ruffer, competing at 195 pounds, was named the outstanding upper weight wrestler.
