Only a fraction of typical November moisture arrived in the Lake Almanor Basin this year.
The monitoring site near the shoreline at Prattville recorded 1.18 inches of total precipitation, which is well under the 4-inch average for the month. The total includes the moisture content of 16.5 inches of snowfall recorded on the West Shore, a figure that is well above average for November.
We are now in an odd situation where our 3.28 inches of accumulated seasonal total precipitation is only 44 percent of average for this point in the year, but our snowfall is at 147 percent of average. Clearly, our November snow was very dry!
The weather prognosticators are suggesting that the first half of December is likely to remain on the dry side. However, they also think the second half of the month might turn wet, so there’s still a reasonable chance for a white Christmas.
Whether or not the December weather will bring the average 5-plus inches of precipitation and 2-plus feet of snowfall remains to be seen.
