Seized fish and game
Question:What do the wardens do with the seized abalone, crab, cod, salmon, etc.? You can’t tell me that it gets thrown away!

Answer: When unlawfully taken fish or game is seized, it is kept as evidence until the case is settled or until the judge orders it returned. In most cases though, if at all possible and if the meat is in good condition, seized fish and game is given to homeless shelters or soup kitchens that allow donations of wild fish and game. Because of inspection requirements, some facilities may not be able to accept these donations. If a suitable facility cannot be found, the evidence is thrown away or destroyed. In some commercial cases involving commercial size loads, the Fish and Game Code allows for this evidence to be sold and the proceeds may be used by the department.

The third annual Good Grief Golf Tournament returns to Bailey Creek on Saturday, June 8. Registration starts at 8 a.m. with a 9 a.m. shotgun start.
The tournament is being organized by Sierra Hospice, and proceeds go to Sierra Hospice’s programs. Sierra Hospice is a volunteer and community based organization that provides end-of-life aid and support to patients and families.

There must be something in the water at Chester High, because the school produced some phenomenal athletes this year. Last Saturday, the Volcanoes’ baseball team competed in the Northern Section Division V championship game in Chico.
The game was a hat-trick of sorts for the Volcanoes, who also made it to their division’s football and basketball championships. In addition, Chester was seeded No. 1 in all three sports and hosted all its playoff games. This was the first year in Chester High history this has happened.

We are still enjoying spring weather conditions and the spring bite is in full swing. Warming water conditions have the insect hatches increasing and that is bringing feeding trout closer to the surface.
Lake Almanor
Good reports are coming from several areas of the lake according to Doug Neal of Almanor Fishing Adventures (258-6732). Trolling has been good at all the usual spots: Rec 1 to Big Cove, the east shore from Canyon Dam to Lake Cove, Dorado Inn, Lake Haven Resort to Big Springs, Almanor West and Prattville. Nightcrawlers behind a dodger, or fast-action lures, are the most successful trolling rigs.
Stowing gear
Question: I would like a definition of “stowed” in regard to fishing gear while transiting a state marine reserve. The reason I ask is that a sport fisherman reported he was stopped by a patrol boat at the Channel Islands and told he could have been cited for having his rods in the rod holders. He was told he should have had them in his small cuddy.
