Portola City Hall closed after fire

The City of Portola has established a temporary City Hall  at the Williams House Museum/Visitor Center, 424 E. Sierra Ave. (Highway 70). The phone number is 832-0671. It will be open at 8 a.m. Monday, Feb. 7. City Manager Jim Murphy said he expected city staff to occupy the temporary location for a week to 10 days. For more information, see the Feb. 9 issue of the newspaper.

All phone and e-mail communication is out at Portola City Hall following a fire earlier today. According to City Manager Jim Murphy, the fire caused major damage, including smoke damage. The City Council will hold an emergency meeting this afternoon at 4 p.m. at the Portola library to authorize a temporary office rental and repairs to City Hall.

 

Brown’s budget cuts likely to hit beleaguered fair hard

Governor Jerry Brown’s proposed budget puts Plumas-Sierra County Fair manager John Steffanic in a tough spot, right along with the Board of Supervisors.

Brown’s budget proposes a 30 percent reduction in the state’s food and agriculture budget. This includes elimination of all funding for fairs and expositions, which totals $32 million.

 

Feather River College players bring suit of their own

Attorneys for Feather River College (FRC) students Emory Boyd Jr., Quinton Hancock and Nicholos Page filed a complaint Jan. 25 with the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of California, naming Feather River Community College District (FRCCD), FRC athletic director Merle Trueblood and FRC football coach James Johnson as defendants.

 

Campground closures in eastern Plumas County

Finding a camping spot in Eastern Plumas this summer could prove challenging, and local tourism providers could suffer, as a result of several planned campground closures.

The California Department of Parks and Recreation (CDPR) announced Jan. 25 that Plumas-Eureka State Park (PESP) would be partially closed this summer for a hazardous materials cleanup. Although some areas of the park will remain open, the campground, museum and other selected sites will be closed temporarily.

 

Comedy night at Town Hall Theater

Hors d’oeuvres, wine, beer, chocolate and laughs are on the menu Monday, Feb. 14, for Comedy Night at the Town Hall Theatre.

Local stand-up comics are preparing to entertain with their different brands of humor.

The Association of Concerned Theatre-goers is sponsoring this event as a fundraiser for local scholarships to students in the theater arts.

The evening gets underway 6:30 – 7 p.m. with hors d’oeuvres and a no-host bar. The show starts at 7 p.m. There is one intermission and a special chocolate treat for dessert.

Prices are $8 a person or $15 a couple. Bring your sweetie for a fun Valentine’s Day evening.
