West End Theatre hosts three musical acts

Feather Publishing
7/11/2012

The West End Theatre in Quincy will host its first evening of music Sunday, July 15. Local Quincy musician Mel Wade will kick off the music at 7 p.m., followed by Lucas Young and the Wilderness, of Reno, and Victor & Penny, of Chicago.

The headlining band, Victor & Penny, is a Kansas City- and Chicago-born duo singing music they call “antique pop” accompanied by ukulele and an old guitar. With characteristic charm and good humor, they bring a fresh twist to music of the early 20th century and offer unique arrangements of modern tunes as well as clever original songs.

Victor & Penny impress and delight audiences with their infectious energy and deft and often-surprising jazz guitar licks anchored by a one-ukulele rhythm section. Victor & Penny is Jeff Freling of the Chicago Blue Man Group and a student at Berklee School of Music, and Erin McGrane of the cabaret group Alacartoona and George Clooney’s “Up In The Air.” The duo is touring the U.S. in 2012, having traveled nearly 15,000 miles to date.

Lucas Young and the Wilderness is a recently formed band out of Reno consisting of Lucas Young, Justin Freschi, Andrew Sherbondy, Cecil McCumber and Kristin Pitman. Their songs run the gamut from soft ballads to crunchy rock numbers, each song painting a picturesque landscape, a journey in and of itself.

Finding inspiration from the natural beauty of the region, Mel Wade has spent the past year in Quincy writing and recording songs for an upcoming album she plans to release in the fall. Wade’s genre of bluesy-folk and soul grew from the musical seeds planted throughout her childhood. With her voice as the lead instrument and guitar picking as support, Wade’s music explores the layers between honesty and judgment. Each new song stretches her voice and fingers, forcing a lyrical dance between the two.

Tickets are $10 and are for sale at the Alley Cat Cafe or online at WestEndTheatre.us. The Alley Cat Cafe will open at 6 p.m. before the concert so patrons can enjoy food and libations on the patio.
