For the first time in four years, business on the Western Pacific Railroad in Portola has reached the point where it has been necessary to hire brakemen. In addition to calling all men back into service, eight new men have been added locally.

50 YEARS AGO... 1959
Actual cash outlay by Plumas County in connection with the conviction of Herbert Dale Lewis for the hatchet murder of Walter N. Lucas will amount to $10,021 by the time all claims are in.

Plumas   County's transient occupany tax (TOT), better known as the "bed tax" will go up six percent next month as the result of action by the Plumas County Board of Supervisors this week.
Directors of the  Chester Sanitary District granted final approval for Leroy Austin, owner of Feather River Disposal, to assume the solid waste pickup franchise from Curtis Lee.
