Bow hunting for turkeys

Question: While bow hunting for turkeys last week, I saw a flock of hens and jakes on the side of a highway and I got to wondering if it’s legal to hunt off the side of a highway. I know we can’t shoot across a highway, but exactly how many yards or feet away does a bow hunter have to be?

“To me, our final destination is the state tournament. We have to beat the best teams to get there,” said Feather River College’s softball coach Taylr Hollis after the team’s victories over Lassen College last Saturday.

The Lady Eagles dominated the Cougars in a double header, winning 12-2 and 11-2. The wins elevated the Eagles’ record to an impressive 15-3 in conference and 22-14 overall. Lassen dropped to 8-10 in conference and 15-22 overall.

Though Feather River previously swept Lassen earlier in the season, Hollis made sure her players didn’t enter the game too cocky.

It was a busy week for the baseball teams from all four high schools in Plumas County. In all, the teams played a total of 10 games; some for better and some for worse.

The big winner of the week was Chester, with three games and three wins. The Volcanoes took Greenville down 18-3 April 10. Continuing its streak, Chester beat Liberty Christian twice in a row during its April 12 double header. The Volcanoes dominated with 19-0 and 17-3 wins.

“The game against Greenville was ugly,” commented Chester’s coach Terry Hernandez. “Both teams made a lot of errors. We played better against Liberty Christian and we’re now where we want to be.”

“Down at the core of every fisherman’s heart is the belief that on any day something wonderful and unlikely could be made to happen, and that if you’re careful and patient enough it could happen to you.”

—John Gierach, “Standing in a River Waving a Stick”

The fishing is good right now. Does that mean that you will catch a fish on every cast or even every other cast? No.

When I say the fishing is “good,” I mean an average angler has a good chance of catching something. And we are all average anglers, especially in the opinion of the fish. That might not fit a mathematician’s definition of “average” but fishing has its very own math. Measurements in particular, being more fluid and subjective when applied to angling, are subject to an entirely different set of rules. But let’s save that discussion for another day.
