These are the stories we are working on for this week's newspaper:
  • Image makeover needed: In the soon-to-be-released grand jury report, the jurors said the county’s Alcohol and Drug and Mental Health departments are suffering from a poor public image.
  • Help at the jail: The Board of Supervisors approved the sheriff’s request to hire four corrections officers, but not before reminding him the county is facing a $3 million budget problem.
  • Water disaster?: The state has already enacted emergency conservation measures. The county is thinking about declaring a local disaster as well.

Street Rod Extravaganza comes to Lake Almanor

Rumbling engines, dazzling jewel-toned paint and the hot music of Buzz Barrett Sound Productions will kick off the 26th annual Street Rod Extravaganza Sept. 10 in the Chester Park.

The Lake Almanor Area Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau sponsors the event for entries of 1982 and older stock, modified and special interest cars and trucks along with rat rods and those under construction.

Motorcycles and era correct replica and kit cars are also among the 25 classifications being welcomed.

Hot rodders will arrive in town Friday, Sept. 9, to make an impressive Main Street appearance during the Friday night registration at the Cotton Candy Diner and the Sock Hop being hosted by the Main Street Coffee Bar.

In addition to all the Friday night fun, this premier Northern California car show offers a 35-mile Poker Run cruise around Lake Almanor and an in-town Poker Walk among the local merchants.

The 2011 route will offer a first-time run through Lake Almanor West, which will offer motorists an extraordinary lake view.

The Rotary Club of Chester will be firing up the “Roadhouse Grill” to feed the rodders and all the community guests.

Event awards

The car show will feature the popular People’s Choice, Ladies’ Choice and Street Rod Extravaganza awards.

Team member Garn Pringle said winners could expect newly creative award plaques. He described them as “3-D relief and more upscale than before.”

The event will also offer participants first- and second-place awards for each classification.

Other awards will include the 50/50 drawing and best poker hands for the poker run and poker walk.

It is likely that even more merchants will be participating in the poker walk this year.

“More merchants means more card draws and more chances of winning the poker hand,” Pringle said.

Goodie bags will include local gift coupons, a dash plaque and Lake Almanor publications and will be available to the first 100 registrants.

For more information about the Sept. 10 event call the Lake Almanor Area Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau at 258-2426.
