  • Nursing home to close: Healthcare leaders learned that the skilled nursing hospital in Quincy is slated for closure, which would result in the relocation of more than three dozen patients and the loss of 60 jobs.
  • Program sacked: Judge Ira Kaufman is no longer sentencing people to drug court. He said he was ending the program because clients weren’t being served.

Man dies after rollover accident on La Porte Rd.

A Sparks, Nev., man was killed July 23 when the vehicle he was riding in crashed on La Porte Road, about a half mile south of Nelson Creek, southwest of Quincy.
According to the California Highway Patrol, William Paynter, 34, died from head injuries after a 1998 GMC Yukon, driven by Jeffery Baker, 34, also of Sparks, rolled over while traveling down a steep grade on the road about 5:30 p.m.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
The CHP said the accident happened after Baker swerved the vehicle violently to the right. The front of the GMC struck a rock embankment, causing the vehicle to roll.
According to the report, Paynter stuck his head on the collapsing roof as the vehicle was rolling, causing the fatal injury. Baker sustained minor injuries.
The CHP reported both men were wearing seat belts.
