Fatal snowmobile accident in Lakes Basin
On Sunday, April 3, at about 4:21 p.m. the Sierra County Sheriff’s Office was advised by Plumas County Sheriff’s Office that a snowmobile accident had occurred near the Sierra/Plumas county line. The location was approximately 40 feet from the entrance to the Day Use Area of Gold Lake, near the town of Sierra City. The rider had apparently rolled the snowmobile down a slight ledge and then became trapped beneath the snowmobile.
Upon arrival, responding agencies located two citizens performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the victim. The victim was pronounced deceased at the scene. The Sierra County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office is investigating the cause of death, pending examination. The cause of the accident is under investigation of the Grass Valley Area Office of the California Highway Patrol. Next-of-kin has been notified. The deceased was a 64-year-old resident of Fairfax. She also had a summer home in Sierra City.
Multiple agencies responded to assist including Plumas County Sheriff’s Office, Eastern Plumas Health Care Ambulance, Sierra City Volunteer Fire Department and Downieville Volunteer Fire Department, members of the Plumas National Forest, Sacramento CHP and Renown Care Flight.
