These are the stories we are working on for this week's newspaper:
  • Image makeover needed: In the soon-to-be-released grand jury report, the jurors said the county’s Alcohol and Drug and Mental Health departments are suffering from a poor public image.
  • Help at the jail: The Board of Supervisors approved the sheriff’s request to hire four corrections officers, but not before reminding him the county is facing a $3 million budget problem.
  • Water disaster?: The state has already enacted emergency conservation measures. The county is thinking about declaring a local disaster as well.

12/1/2010

The Central Plumas Recreation and Park District is in the last week for Youth Basketball sign-ups. Players in 3rd through 8th grades are encouraged to sign up for the league this week, before it is too late.

Volunteer coaches will teach basketball skills and concepts while promoting teamwork and good sportsmanship. “The goal of this league is to teach the fundamentals of basketball while providing the participants with a fun and enjoyable experience”, stated Sports Coordinator, Jeren Seibel. All games and practices will be held at Quincy High School in the lower gym. Teams will practice throughout the month of December with games beginning in January and lasting through February. The season will begin with a mandatory skill clinic for each division during the first week of December. Volunteer coaches and assistants are needed in all divisions. Training will be available for all coaches through a coaches clinic, and the date on that is still to be determined. New and returning coaches are requested to contact the Recreation District if they are interested in coaching or would like more information. Registration for the youth basketball league will be accepted until noon on December 6th at the Recreation District office, 34 Fairground Road in Quincy.

In addition, the 1st and 2nd grade basketball program is tentatively slated to begin the first week of January. For more information on youth basketball and other programs contact the Recreation District at 283-3278.
