Smoke for the Bullards Bar Fire is covering Plumas County

A fire that started on on the Tahoe National Forest near Bullards Bar Reservoir is spreading smoke into Plumas County. Smoke is visible through much of the county and ash is falling in many areas.

The Bullards Bar Fire started late yesterday afternoon in hot dry and windy conditions. It burned actively through the night. Yesterday's hot and dry conditions have given way to a cooler and more humid air mass today, but continued winds are apparently fanning the flames.

The fire is burning in Yuba County northeast of Yuba City and east of Marysville near Marysville Road.  Road closures and evacuations are in effect.  The rapid spread of the blaze has prompted Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to declare a state of emergency in Yuba County.

The fire was reported to be 850 acres earlier today and was being fought by 420 fire fighters. Firefighters are being challenged by very steep terrain, however weather conditions over the next 36 to 48 hours should turn more favorable.

Firefighting efforts are being coordinated by the Tahoe National Forest and Cal Fire.
