Hiker dies on Nelson Creek Trail

Joshua Sebold

Nicolas Solovieff, a 58-year-old Vallejo resident, died suddenly while hiking on the Nelson Creek Trail around noon Friday, July 23.

Solovieff had been hiking with his brother and some friends on an annual trip when his companions realized that he was no longer with the group.

Upon traveling back down the path, the group discovered the victim unresponsive several feet down an embankment next to the trail.

Members of Solovieff’s party tried to resuscitate him to no avail, while one of them went for help and called 911 from the nearest residence.

A Plumas District Hospital ambulance, Quincy Fire Rescue, a Forest Service fire engine and members of the Plumas County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue Team responded.

Solovieff’s death was reported at the scene and a coroner’s review is pending, but his companions reported he had no major medical conditions and wasn’t on any medications.
