Night on the town for FRC students
To introduce Feather River College to the Quincy community and businesses, the first Feather River College Night will take place Thursday, August 26, from 4 - 8 p.m. The event is a collaboration of Quincy merchants and FRC SIFE to welcome new and returning students into the community and bring awareness of products, services and resources offered locally.
Students will explore Main Street from the courthouse and work their way down to the Farmer's Market. The inspiration behind the event was a "Shop Local" forum hosted by SIFE in February.
It became apparent there was a disconnect between college students and merchants, with students not knowing what was available in town, and merchants not knowing how to reach students.
FRC SIFE publicist Jessika Hobbs explained, "When students move to Quincy, many are not familiar with a traditional Main Street shopping district. It sounds silly, but it takes them a few months to acclimate to a small town. We are hoping that students will be welcomed from the first week and continue patronizing our wonderful local businesses."
Participating businesses can offer year-round student discounts, light snacks and be involved in the weeklong "Eagle Hunt," which will invite students into businesses to search for the hidden eagles.
Businesses not located on Main Street are encouraged to participate as well. There will be opportunities to set up informational tables along the route or partner with Main Street merchants. Student needs include everything from haircuts to oil changes.
The more aware students are of products and services, the more likely they are to consume locally. Participating businesses make a $30 contribution, which covers event marketing, decorations, and Quincy Natural Foods reusable shopping bags that will be distributed to students. Businesses that would like to participate may contact Amy Carey at 283-4735 by Friday, July 23.
