These are a few of the stories you will find in this week's printed newspaper:

  • New state: Proponents of the state of Jefferson pushed the Plumas County Board of Supervisors to sign a declaration of support Jan. 20, but they didn’t get it.
  • Nursing home to close: Healthcare leaders learned that the skilled nursing hospital in Quincy is slated for closure, which would result in the relocation of more than three dozen patients and the loss of 60 jobs.
  • Program sacked: Judge Ira Kaufman is no longer sentencing people to drug court. He said he was ending the program because clients weren’t being served.

Quincy fire chief suffers heart attack

Quincy Fire Chief Robbie Cassou was airlifted to Reno’s Renown Hospital Saturday, May 1, after suffering a heart attack. He was at the fire station preparing for a day of training with the Fire Academy when the attack occurred.

Fortunately, Quincy volunteer firefighter and Plumas District Hospital paramedic Dean Eaton was at his side when he noticed Cassou having some difficulty breathing. Eaton quickly put him on an advanced life support cardiac monitor — carried onboard the fire rescue truck — and confirmed his condition.

Cassou, 48, is reported in good condition after having a stent inserted to open a blocked artery. He is expected to be moved out of ICU yesterday, Tuesday, and should return to work in four to six weeks.

In the meantime, Deputy Chief David Windle and Assistant Chief Ray Nichol have assumed responsibility for the fire department.

Cassou’s wife, Julie, said the flow of visitors has been overwhelming, however she and Robbie have asked everyone to try and give him a break so he can get some rest and speed his recovery time.

Cassou has been with the department for 29 years and was named chief in January 2007.
