Fly-In Breakfast features free plane rides for kids

Feather Publishing
9/3/2014

The Rotary Club of Portola hosts its annual Fly-In Pancake Breakfast on Sunday, Sept. 7, from 8 to 11 a.m. at Nervino Airport in Beckwourth.

The breakfast is the club's largest fundraiser of the year, with proceeds going toward college scholarships and community service projects.

Club members will serve pancakes, sausage, eggs, juice and coffee to an expected crowd of 600. The Rotary gin fizz booth will also be open. In addition to the all-you-can-eat breakfast, attendees will hear live music from the local band Code Bluegrass, view classic and antique cars and trucks and be able to take monster truck rides. The Reno British Car Club is also returning with a collection of MG sports cars.

New to the event this year is the Young Eagles Program. This program introduces young people ages 8 through 17 to aviation by giving them a free plane ride.

The ever-popular Rotary bounce house will also be set up for the kids.

There will be a giveaway with many great prizes and the Rotarians will be selling tickets for a 2014 Polaris ATV.

The cost of the event is $10 for adults and $6 for children 12 and under.

For more information visit RotaryClubofPortola.com or call Toni Carl at 616-0251 or Kirk Lambert at 251-3815.

Our Truckee EAA chapter has not held a Young Eagles rally at Nervino in about 16 years, and we're happy to be returning! Registration for the flights starts by 8 a.m. and we'll get young folks in the air as soon as possible. Flights are on a first come-first served basis. We expect a crush of sign-ups at 8, so please be patient. After the flight, the Young Eagle receives a certificate and a logbook. The logbook has a code on it for the Young Eagle to activate a complimentary student membership in EAA, and also gain access to Sporty's Pilot Shop's "Learn To Fly" course, as well as other benefits. Come fly with us!

So great to see the Young Eagles Program back, my daughter flew once from Nervino with this program. It creates confidence and challenges them wonderfully.
