These are a few of the stories you will find in this week's printed newspaper:

  • New state: Proponents of the state of Jefferson pushed the Plumas County Board of Supervisors to sign a declaration of support Jan. 20, but they didn’t get it.
  • Nursing home to close: Healthcare leaders learned that the skilled nursing hospital in Quincy is slated for closure, which would result in the relocation of more than three dozen patients and the loss of 60 jobs.
  • Program sacked: Judge Ira Kaufman is no longer sentencing people to drug court. He said he was ending the program because clients weren’t being served.

Reception features images of ancient trees, familiar landscapes

Ancient Twist No. 1” by Robbie Laird
Feather Publishing

During the month of August, The Back Room Art Gallery in Books & Beyond in Chester will feature Robbie Laird, mixed water media artist, and Karin Urquhart, oil and watercolor artist.
Laird’s works present the ancient bristlecone pine forest and its magnificent trees sculpted through several thousand years of the tree’s life. Laird says, “I find exceptional beauty in transitions in nature and life cycles. The symbiotic relationship between trees and the boulders that anchor them for life is especially compelling to me.”

Urquhart brings oil paintings of well-known landscapes. Featured is “On the Road to Dogtown,” a painting of a eucalyptus grove along Highway 1. This was an award winner at the prestigious fine arts division of the Marin County Fair last month. Also exhibited is “Peaceful Point — Lake Almanor.” This oil on canvas of Lassen Peak as viewed from Peaceful Point puts emphasis on the surrounding forest and rocks.
Both artists say they enjoy painting the timeless relationship of trees, rocks and boulders. All are invited to meet the artists Saturday, Aug. 16, from 4 to 7 p.m. at their artists’ reception, which will be held in conjunction with the Old Towne Wine Stroll. Refreshments will be served.
