These are the stories you will find in this week's newspaper:
  • A second chance: The new Day Reporting Center in Quincy held a grand opening that featured a recognition ceremony to honor achievements of people in the Alternative Sentencing Program.
  • Classrooms closed: Just days before classes were to begin, Quincy Elementary School staff were packing up classrooms in one wing of the structure because a roof needed to be replaced.
  • Body of missing man found: A search for missing Feather River College alumnus Lucius Robbi ended in Idaho with the discovery of his body and car. He was believed to have died from injuries sustained in a single-vehicle crash.

Tickets available for annual beef feed

Beef is what’s for dinner July 20 in the Portola City Park. Hosted by the Portola Volunteer Fire Department, the annual Barbecue Beef Feed will bring good food and a good time for the people of Portola.

From 5 to 8 p.m., the department will serve as much top sirloin, salad, breadsticks and beans as a person can eat. There will also be a cotton candy machine to provide dessert.

According to Portola Fire Chief Henry Johnson, the proceeds from the dinner go directly to purchasing the bikes that will be given to C. Roy Carmichael Elementary School students in December. The fundraiser is essential for this much-anticipated giveaway.

Johnson says they are preparing the fresh beef from the Graeagle Store for an anticipated crowd of more than 300.

This is truly a community event, as River Bums donated the tickets and Plumas Bank donated the fliers.

“This (event) is how we raise money and raise awareness for the fire department,” said Johnson.

Department members went from door to door last week selling tickets for the event; however, tickets are still available at City Hall and Plumas Bank at $15 for adults and $9 for children.

Those who cannot attend may still provide much-appreciated donations at Plumas Bank.

For more information contact Henry Johnson at 318-5864.
