The seeds of community service were widely sown when the Seneca Hospital Auxiliary came together June 11 for its annual officer installation and luncheon.

The tables in the Lake Almanor Elks Lodge were artfully decorated with all things garden to represent the event theme of “Greenhouse Plants.”

Gifts to incoming officers were also plant related and carefully selected to represent the duties they will perform over the course of the coming year.

Secretary Kaye Swanson was given seeds of information to disperse to the greenhouse of volunteers.

Treasurer Barbara Friday was given potting soil to provide nourishment.

Vice president Cathy Rideout was given a gardening shovel to nurture the soil and Jude Morse, who is filling her second term as president, was given a variety of gardening tools so she might provide the care and attention each volunteer will need to grow to his or her full potential.

Morse next introduced the directors who will serve in the coming year. Nancy Foote is serving the first year of her three-year term of office. Carol Griswold is serving her second year and Toddy Cutler, who stepped in to allow Rideout to serve as vice president, will serve the final year of Rideout’s three-year commitment.

Chief Executive Officer Linda Wagner introduced staff members and shared that she was very pleased with the number of board members present for the luncheon.

In attendance were Dana Seandel, Bob Caton, Loretta Gomez and Bill Howe, four out of five sitting directors.

Following the installation, committee chairpeople offered a variety of reports about volunteer hours, scholarships and the outcomes of the Seneca Hospital Health Fair and the June 4 Community Blood Drive.

Scholarships

Each year the Auxiliary gives scholarships to graduating seniors who are seeking higher education in a medically related field.

Committee chairwoman Nancy Foote said five $400 scholarships were given to graduates in the Lake Almanor Basin and Westwood.

The scholarships are designed to provide $200 in financial aid for each of two semesters.

Chester High School graduates receiving scholarships are Emily Monday, Alexis Buchanan and Sydnee Henry.

Alexander Davidge, a Lake Almanor Christian School graduate, received a scholarship, as did Westwood High School senior Jonathan DeMartimprey.

Volunteer hours

In the past year, the dedicated Auxiliary members have worked a total of 1,282 hours in service of the Seneca Healthcare District and the patients it serves.

Volunteer time is accrued in a variety of tasks completed both inside the hospital, the skilled nursing facility and in administrative related tasks like the annual donation letter campaign or officer tasks.

During the luncheon, chair Toddy Cutler recognized volunteer service in five hourly increments.

Volunteers recognized in the 20 – 29 hour category were Peggy Dick, Wayne Friday, Carol Griswold, Eileen Kennelly, Jan Owen and Linda Yaap.

In the 30 – 39 hour category, volunteers recognized were Marge Edwards, Linda Hiltunen, Judy Martin, Cathy Rideout and Barbara Smith.

Volunteering 40 – 49 hours were Susan Bourquin, Bill Stuersel, Sharon Weslar and Karen Wilson.

Volunteers recognized in the 50 – 99 hour category were Toddy Cutler, Kathy Donley and Kaye Swanson.

In the highest increment, volunteers recognized in the 100 – 175 hour category were Irene Burkey, Barbara Friday and Jude Morse.

Committee chairpeople needed

President Morse announced that chairpeople are needed for a variety of committees.

She highly encouraged members to step forward and take responsibility for the planning and scheduling involved for the lobby desk, installation luncheon, annual wellness screening, flu clinic and the twice-yearly blood drives.

The Seneca Hospital Auxiliary will next meet Wednesday, July 9, at 10 a.m. in the Lake Almanor Clinic conference room.
