Lobster fishing from a six-pack boat

Q. I run a six-pack charter boat business and we often hoop net for crab and lobster. My deckhands and I make money by cleaning our passenger’s catch. This includes both rock crab and lobster.

We always wait until we make landfall before we tail the bugs. This year the new regulations say: (e) Spiny lobsters shall be kept in a whole, measurable condition until being prepared for immediate consumption.

Last week’s boys’ basketball game between Chester and Lassen promised to be good, so two sports editors showed up to cover the same match.

With me there supporting Chester, and Susanville’s Kayleen Taylor there rooting for Lassen, we stood under opposite baskets, taking photos and notes of our respective teams as they battled it out.

Prior to the match we gave one another some good-natured ribbing, each confident that our team was going to win.

With Chester leading by nine points at halftime, I began to rub it in. Taylor wasn’t fazed and continued to back her Grizzlies.

Once the final buzzer sounded and Chester was victorious, I did my best not to gloat. I offered condolences to Taylor, to which she responded with harsh words.

Got to love her competitiveness, but I was glad to be on the winning side. Better luck next time Kayleen!

The popular ranger-led snowshoe walks will be offered from the Kohm Yah-mah-nee Visitor Center near the park’s southwest entrance beginning Dec. 26.

“Bring your friends and family to the park and experience the fun of snowshoeing through a red fir forest blanketed in deep snow,” said Superintendent Darlene M. Koontz.

Frenchman and Davis Lakes

Winter weather has slowed, but not stopped the fishing. The recent cold weather brought ice to Frenchman and Davis lakes. However, recent warmer weather has melted some of that ice.

Frenchman was reported to be ice free in front of the dam while the north end of the lake had turning from ice to slush. Anglers were doing well with nightcrawlers and PowerBait where they could find open water.
