Tests Showed Coliform Bacteria in the Village Pressure Zone of the Lake Almanor CC MWC's Water System
Lake Almanor Country Club (LACC) Mutual Water Company (MWC) recently violated a drinking water standard. Although this incident was not an emergency, as our customers, you have a right to know what happened and what we did to correct the situation.
We routinely monitor for drinking water contaminants in the water system. For November 2011, we collected nine samples from our water system to test for the presence of coliform bacteria. Three of these samples showed the presence of coliform bacteria. The standard is that no more than one sample per month may show the presence of coliform bacteria.
What Should You Do?
You do not need to boil your water or take other corrective actions. However, if you have specific health concerns, consult your doctor.
People with severely compromised immune systems, infants, and some elderly may be at increased risk. These people should seek advice about drinking water from their health care providers. General guidelines on ways to lessen the risk of infection by microbes are available from EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1 (800) 426-4791.
What Does This Mean?
This is not an emergency. If it were, you would have been notified immediately. Coliform bacteria are generally not harmful themselves. Coliforms are bacteria which are naturally present in the environment and are used as an indicator that other, potentially-harmful, bacteria may be present. Coliforms were found in more samples than allowed and this was a warning of potential problems.
Usually, coliform bacteria are a signal that there may be a problem with our source of supply, storage, or distribution systems. Whenever we detect coliform bacteria in any sample, we do follow-up testing to see if other bacteria of greater concern, such as fecal coliform or E. coli, are present. We did not find any of these bacteria in our subsequent testing, and further testing shows that this problem has been resolved.
What Happened? What Was Done?
On November 16, 2011, the Company collected a routine sample from the distribution system in the Village pressure zone that was found to contain total coliform bacteria. Two repeat samples were then collected on November 18, 2011, one of which was found to contain total coliform bacteria. Two additional repeat samples were collected on November 23, 2011, one of which was again found to contain total coliform bacteria. The area where the total coliform was detected was flushed extensively and samples collected from the distribution system since that time have not detected any total coliform bacteria.

Notice of Decision:  Humbug Summit and Panther Springs Remote Automated Weather Station (RAWS) Installation
On December 19, 2011, Alfred G. Vazquez, District Ranger of the Almanor Ranger District signed a Decision Notice and Finding of No Significant Impact authorizing the installation of two permanent RAWS stations in two separate locations within the Lassen National Forest, and the removal of trees surrounding the Chester RAWS to correct deficiciencies in windspeed data collection at that station. The permanent installation sites are located at Panther Springs, near the community of Boondocks in Tehama County (sec. 32 T.28N., R.2E.) and Humbug Summit, along the Humbug Summit ridgeline in Plumas County (sec. 14 T.26N., R.5E.). The Chester RAWS is located at the Almanor Ranger District Office in Chester, CA (Plumas County) (sec. 18 T.28N, R.7E.).
