- The Portola High School football team, playing with crisp confidence in front of a home crowd last Friday night, dismantled Williams 47-0 in the teams’ league opener.

It was the first real win for Portola this season, after the Tigers lost their first two games to formidable schools and then had last week’s opponent forfeit.

The Tigers were in signature form against Williams, taking a 21-0 lead by the end of the first quarter and adding two more touchdowns before halftime.

The game went to a running clock with more than five minutes remaining in the first half, indicating Portola’s dominance.

Portola junior Zach Martinez totaled 175 yards rushing on 15 carries and scored the Tigers’ first three touchdowns.

Ricky Lowdermilk, Oscar Romero, Nasry Jawaad and Davidson Borgmeyer each scored one rushing touchdown for Portola in the second and third quarters.

Portola’s ground game was unstoppable, as six ball carriers combined for 376 total yards. Adding to Martinez’s 175-yard performance was Klint Williams (seven carries for 65 yards), Romero (six for 51), Jawaad (six for 41) and Borgmeyer (three for 19).

Lowdermilk, playing quarterback, executed Portola’s offense with competence. Lowdermilk completed two passes for 39 yards and gained 25 yards on two runs, including a touchdown.

The Tigers’ defense was anchored by Williams (two tackles, five assists), Tyler Atkins (three tackles, one assist), Patrick Steffanic (five assists), Flint Fambrough (one tackle, three assists) and Romero (one tackle, three assists).

Justin Russell, Mario Montemayor, Atkins and Steffanic each captured one sack for the Tigers on their way to the shutout, and Williams recovered one fumble.

Romero was successful on Portola’s first four PAT kicks and finished the night 5-for-7.

The Tigers’ travel to Hamilton (3-2) this Friday for their second league matchup.
