|These are the stories we are working on for this week's newspaper:|
The deadline to request a vote-by-mail ballot for the special election Jan. 4 has now passed. Voters who want to vote will have to come to the courthouse in Quincy and pick up a ballot.
Voters may vote at the courthouse, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Regular polling places will not be used for this special consolidated election. Voters should note the courthouse will be closed Friday, Dec. 31.
Those who cannot make it to Quincy this week to vote can still cast ballots at the courthouse Monday and Tuesday, Jan. 3 – 4. Ballots must be returned to the county elections office by 8 p.m. election day, Jan. 4.
For those who already have vote-by-mail ballots, postal officials recommend they mail their ballots by Dec. 31, at the latest.
For more information, voters should call the elections office at 283-6256.
Despite the busy holiday season, winter weather and the consolidation, election officials are reporting a good turnout so far. As of Dec. 22, the elections division had issued 8,108 vote-by-mail ballots. Of those, 2,930 had been returned, yielding a return of 37 percent.
Marcy DeMartile of the elections division said her office has been receiving between 250 and 700 ballots a day and has been mailing out 30 – 75.
The election features Democrat Ken Cooley against Republican Ted Gaines to fill the state Senate seat vacated by the death of longtime senator Dave Cox.
